Fast talk from the fast-track salesmen
The Hill ^ | June 9th, 2015 | By Curtis Ellis, contributor

President Obama's GOP salesmen are telling fellow House members that fast-track trade promotion authority (TPA) will "constrain the president" to do what Congress wants when he negotiates the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Sounds reassuring, but there's one problem: It's just not true.

Pointing to the negotiating objectives the Senate-approved bill lays out, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) says that "TPA makes the president follow dozens of strict objectives in his negotiations so that your priorities come first — not his."

First, let's be clear: The Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations have been underway for six years. According to the U.S. trade representative, they are in the "end game" and will be wrapped up once TPA is approved. Scalise and company are a little late setting objectives for negotiations that have already taken place.

But Paul Ryan and Ted Cruz told us TPA would give Congress total control over the deal and that Congress would be directing the POTUS on THEIR priorities.

Yeah, like in a six year time warp.

Again, you’re calling him a liar? Have you read the bill?

"Again, you’re calling him a liar? Have you read the bill?"

No.

Ryan and Cruz wrote a widely dispersed editorial that said TPA (TPA, get that?) provided the Congress control over the terms of the negotiations.

How could a law not yet passed provide the Congress control over negotiations that have occurred over the last 6 years?

I'm not calling Ted Cruz or Paul Ryan liars.

I'm saying what they said cannot be true.

I trust Ted to do the right thing. its just that obummer never does anything that would actually help America. that scares me. he also loves to give away American sovereignty. If Cruz is voting for it expecting that he’ll be pres when it comes into effect, that is great. but he’d better win then.

Neither the reporter or you have any access to this bill, as it is being treated like something above top secret. I think Senator Cruz and Rep. Ryan mean that the congress would have control over ongoing and finalized negotiations. I’ve worked at those levels, but due to some memory issues I’m having a hard time putting an explanation together. But I know what they’re saying.

Are you calling Jeff Sessions and Duncan Hunter liars?

I don't expect you to answer that question. I just pose it rhetorically to point out that it is pointless to make the argument that disagreeing with a politician means you are calling him a liar. Both Jeff Sessions and Duncan Hunter have good faith objections to passing the TPA without disclosing what is in the TPP. That doesn't mean they are calling Ted Cruz a liar. It means they disagree with him in good faith. On this one, Cruz is wrong. A vote should not be held in the House on the TPA until the complete terms of the TPP have been disclosed.

"TPA makes the president follow dozens of strict objectives in his negotiations so that your priorities come first — not his." First, let's be clear: The Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations have been underway for six years.

Basically, those who are pushing TPP are lying at every turn because the negotiations are already mostly a done deal. They are maintaining this absurd amount of secrecy because it gives the opponents less time to digest hundreds of pages and assess real impact of the agreement - and less time for the public to react.

And fast track authority with its up or down vote and no amendments is simply designed to make it that much more difficult to defeat it in Congress.

Lol, maybe you're calling them ignoramuses. But they are supposed to be two of the GOP's brightest. Such a puzzle.

That is just an incredible chunk of information. Everything those pushing TPP are saying is basically just part of a ruse to fool the public and the less informed members of Congress.

The die is cast on this thing and they are just spinning and lying and maneuvering to secure enough votes to pass fast track and then TPP.

Here’s the metric, if Obola is pushing this hard for it, it can’t be good for the US. Game: name one piece of legislation Obola has pushed that’s good for the US.

from the article:

More importantly, if you look at the language of the TPA bill, you see the claim that TPA “makes the president follow dozens of strict objectives” is transparently false.

What is the average voter is supposed to do when he can’t actually read these bills, but also can’t trust what members of either party is saying? Especially if each one is saying that the other is lying.
