Look at the video again - he was SECONDS AWAY FROM SHOOTING some kids.

No, he wasn't.
His finger was never on the trigger.
The gun was never pointed directly at any of the assailants. (you may choose to view them as "kids" but I saw assailants preparing to rush him)

As soon as the threat was over, he holstered his gun.

Does anyone know who the big dude in the shorts was? Why was he following the cop around?

I was surprised that the black boys had decent (normal)haircuts and were well groomed. Certainly not the appearance we are used to seeing on the news or on the streets.

You pull your gun, and you are seconds away from shooting someone- unless you think it takes a significantly long time to move your finger ONTO the trigger, or that a gun is a merely a pointing device

And my point is that he put himself into the position where he felt he needed to draw his weapon. He escalated the situation every place he went. Just listen to the video and the panic and screaming that starts every place he runs.

Not only that, one of them was repeatedly pulling up his shorts ... which to the cop in the situation probably looked like the guy was reaching for something.
