Two murderers who used power tools to escape from prison must have taken days to cut through steel walls and pipes and break through the bricks, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday as a $100,000 reward was posted for information leading to their capture.

After the search is over, "we'll go through the exact details of what they did and how they did it to ensure this never happens again," Cuomo said later.

Hmm, maybe restricting access to power tools might be a place to start....

Based on the photos in the article, I'd suggest the prison let the prisoners watch Clint Eastwood's Alcatraz in the mess hall one too many times.

How did they muffle the noise? How did they get drop cords in place without being seen? If they used battery charged, wouldn’t someone notice the tools were being charged?

How much help did they get and from whom in the prison? I’d look at the guards pretty hard, IMHO.

Days? He’s a master of understatement.

The guys are on some South Sea island right now and he think they planned and executed this escape in days?

Uhhhhhhhh. A question from the back of the re-education camp? Why do you have to wait until after the search is over? Sorry. I didn't attend several Ivy League schools so these things tend to go right over my head.

I would agree. They managed to bribe a guard somehow. In some of the photos in the gallery you can see the extension cords, so they had regular tools, not cordless. The noise is another issue - assuming they did this work at night when things presumably are quiet. Something stinks here. I’ll bet they’re in Canada if they can figure out how to cross the border.

Complacent Staff, somebody knew exactly what was going on. This is what happens when some of the staff don’t care. Seen before and I remember the Norm Johnson escape. The dirty staff helped him get tools and the guards were not doing their checks like they should have.

They played this album to mask the noise...

He will propose a new law limiting all power tools to 7 amp maximum, to help prevent this from happening again.

Power is th easiest to get. Plenty of junction boxes in the utility areas were they were working. Just tap into some hot lines by using the wire nuts already there.

The noise is another problem. From the cuts in the pics, it looks to be a rotary tool, maybe a concrete saw. It would make noise.

You would never get cuts that straight with a sawzall.

The cops are “interviewing” a female employee who was supposedly having a relationship with one of the escapees and seems to have been involved in helping them get the power tools. It is thought at the moment that these tools were obtained from an outside contractor’s construction jobsite inside the prison walls.

One thing you mention is the straightness of the cuts. These men were not experienced at doing this kind of work, and now the cops are considering the possibility that they even had actual hands-on help from somebody in opening the wall, cutting through the pipes, etc.

Governor is considering requiring inmates pull a permit to do any cell alterations.

Proceeds from permitting to help defray prison expenses.

Yup, that’d have taken him a lot less time to get out of Shawshank.

How do you cut pipes without spillage from whatever was contained within those pipes (be it water, wire, steam, etc.)?
