A Lakeview Chinese restaurant with a controversial name that spurred a criminal vandalism case has closed, though its owner said he intends to reopen.

Chop Chop Chinaman, located at 3343 N. Halsted St., has been shuttered for the last several weeks. Its name contains what many consider an ethnic slur — Chinaman — and it caused one woman in February to scrawl lipstick on the restaurant window to express her displeasure.

That woman, Jeannie Harrell, was charged with misdemeanor criminal damage to property. She wrote on the window (in terms saltier than a newspaper allow) that the name is racist, and Harrell was arrested only after posting a picture on social media. A status hearing for the case is scheduled Tuesday at the Circuit Court of Cook County in downtown Chicago. . .

This is Chinaman's Peak in Alberta, recently renamed.

Sounds to me as though co-owner Larry Lee may indeed be Chinese. So why is it racist if someone whose heritage roots include China, to call himself a Chinaman? It would be funny if the other co-owner is black, though I suspect he is probably of Chinese descent as well. I hope they give Jeannie Harrell the max penalty, $2,500.00 fine + 1 year in jail.

There is a Blackman township in my county.
Here in the Cascade Mountains of Washington, there used to be a Nig*erhead Creek but back in the 60's they changed it to Yellowjacket Creek.
It was an old logging nickname for the steam donkey/winch that pulled the logs up to the landing for loading.

Reminds me of a Chinese joint we ran into in Florida, called Ka-Ching. We explained to them that business might pick up if they were a bit more careful with their naming...LOL.

Not quite the same as here, but pretty it takes a pretty sick whitey to complain about the name here.
