As part of a new pilot project aimed at learning more about the parks bears, Jasper National Park is looking for dedicated volunteers to collect bear scat this summer.
Hikers will first be trained to properly collect and handle the samples. After that, they will be asked to gather samples of bear droppings from along the parks trails.

Well, in San Francisco, they are paying city workers to find out where the biggest accumulations of human urine and feces are on their sidewalks.
If I was San Francisco, I’d trade Canada some citizens for bears.
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, had a similar research study that was done in 1978-1980 that was in conjunction with the Wildlife Department, The College of Veterinary Medicine, the Smokey Mountain National Park Service, and the 489th Civil Affairs of the Army Reserve. One can glean quite a lot about wildlife by obtaining scat and examining it for parasites and digested food.The amount of scat from one particular species can also be used to determine population density and there is a formula for such.
