A government watchdog says Social Security overpaid disability beneficiaries by nearly $17 billion over the past decade.
Many payments went to people who earned too much money to qualify for benefits, or to people who werent disabled anymore. Some payments went to people who had died or to prison inmates.

Why is the federal government always crying about SS going broke but never about welfare, foo stamps, subsidized housing or Medicaid?
Why not? You can still vote democrat when you're dead plus you can't get any more "disabled" than being dead.
It did not go to anyone who had died, it went to whomever was cashing their benefit or transferring out money from their account to themselves. People like that should be melted down with flamethrowers as an incentive for others not to do this.
Oh Yeah lets get the money back that should work.
