Pink Slips at Disney. But First, Training Foreign Replacements.
NY Times ^ | JUNE 3, 2015 | JULIA PRESTON

ORLANDO, Fla. — The employees who kept the data systems humming in the vast Walt Disney fantasy fief did not suspect trouble when they were suddenly summoned to meetings with their boss.

While families rode the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and searched for Nemo on clamobiles in the theme parks, these workers monitored computers in industrial buildings nearby, making sure millions of Walt Disney World ticket sales, store purchases and hotel reservations went through without a hitch. Some were performing so well that they thought they had been called in for bonuses.

Instead, about 250 Disney employees were told in late October that they would be laid off. Many of their jobs were transferred to immigrants on temporary visas for highly skilled technical workers, who were brought in by an outsourcing firm based in India. Over the next three months, some Disney employees were required to train their replacements to do the jobs they had lost.

....

Disney executives said that the layoffs were part of a reorganization, and that the company opened more positions than it eliminated.

But the layoffs at Disney and at other companies, including the Southern California Edison power utility, are raising new questions about how businesses and outsourcing companies are using the temporary visas, known as H-1B, to place immigrants in technology jobs in the United States. These visas are at the center of a fierce debate in Congress over whether they complement American workers or displace them.

...

“The program has created a highly lucrative business model of bringing in cheaper H-1B workers to substitute for Americans,” said Ronil Hira, a professor of public policy at Howard University who studies visa programs and has testified before Congress about H-1B visas.

I admitted no such thing. These moderately intelligent worker bees are being displaced but that has been known FOR A LONG TIME.

And for a worker bee, it takes less than a day to inform management of a move out of the company. If they were such high IQ as you claim, they would have job offers lined up everywhere. But they are not, so they are whining.

You failed to answer the more intelligent question, WHY IS THIS TRASH BEING RECYCLED NOW 8 MONTHS AFTER THE FACT?

Once again you are missing the big picture. This is NOT about the H1B program. This is a mainstream media campaign targeting certain conservatives for the 2016 elections.

this problem in H1B is an OLD PROBLEM.

So what you’re missing is WHY NOW?

Until it's resolved, any time is a good time to talk about it.

Obama will not do anything to stop the H1B abuses of the last many years. Why then talk about it? Ted Cruz has already said he will stop these abuses.

Ted Cruz has already said he will stop these abuses.

Where/when has he said this? Can you cite a source or produce a quote?

Yes he said it in a speech recently May 30 hosted by the Kuhner Report.

What you and others, if you’re not paid trolls, fail to understand is that Ted Cruz wants the H1B caps expanded and implemented ONLY WHERE THERE IS DEMONSTRATED NEED.

In the case of Disney, this is a clear abuse of the H1B program BUT .... it does not prohibit Disney from laying off their IT groups and contracting with a 3rd party.

Disney Park ticket prices are way too high and their sales volume is plummeting. Therefore, like any business they need to cut costs and reduce overhead. But they chose to utilize the H1B program in violation of its authorized purpose.

But what Disney and others doing similar have done is not the fault of Ted Cruz. It is the fault of Obama’s lack of enforcement and lack of upholding the rule of law.

Ted Cruz on the other hand will uphold the rule of law and crack down on abuses. He is for creating good jobs in America. He is not in favor of replacing American workers with cheap labor.

BUT ... it is a fact that not enough STEM graduates and specialists are produced by American colleges and universities. Ted Cruz looks at that correctly as a weakness in America’s competitiveness.

Let’s take an example and let’s see if you can go the distance and have the humility to say you have learned something new and now understand better.

The man in the profile page above is Chinese and has resided in America for decades. He is one of the most brilliant academics alive today. He is now a fully tenured professor and has enjoyed growing his family as Americans.

To recruit such people, the H1B program was born.

We are not going to get rid of the H1B program. We are going to scoop up the finest academics, scientists and mathematicians the world over. America is going to have a lock on talent and THAT IS WHAT TED CRUZ WANTS TO ENSURE.

The IT workers at Disney are not in the same league. They are a cut below. If they were truly smart, they would already be reinventing themselves for their next opportunity.

But the fact is that there is a faction of American workers that think they should be ‘guaranteed’ employment and they are no different in their attitudes than socialists who think American workers should be guaranteed a ‘living wage’. They are of the same attitude, the same ilk.

What you also fail to understand is that this story was released by the NY Times in October 2014. There is only one reason they are rehashing it now; to falsely blame and associate candidates like Ted Cruz with H1B abuses like Disney. They will never blame Obama who is the real culprit. They will continue to troll and attack conservative websites to create confusion, doubt and distrust. And this thread is a prime example.
