For the first time in the history of the school lunch program, all children in Baltimore are created equal..
Beginning this week, every student in the city, regardless of income level, is being offered free breakfast and lunch under a federal program that allows school districts to eliminate a decades-old meal-subsidy structure for students in high-poverty schools.
Baltimore is among a handful of districts in Maryland taking advantage of the opportunity that was opened to schools nationwide last year. Maryland schools are able to adopt the program under state legislation passed this year in the General Assembly.
Del. Keith Haynes, chief sponsor of the legislation, said Tuesday during an announcement at Beechfield Elementary/Middle School that the law is the "great equalizer" for city students, closing one more gap that exists from socio-economic disparities.
"We know that nutritious, balanced meals has a direct correlation to positive outcomes for our students," said Haynes, a Baltimore Democrat. "And we know not everyone has access to that."(continued)

I sometimes buy a pre-packaged one at Wal-Mart for under three dollars, which is a good deal.
They’re not free - someone else is paying for them. Likely someone that has NO kids in Boston’s school system.
Freeloaders - start ‘em early!
That ‘nutritious’ food wouldn’t be loaded with hormones to get the kids experimenting with the sex they learned in their ‘health’ class, would it?
This ‘free’ government program wouldn’t be the beginnings of the government taking control away from the parents, would it?
All that glitters is not gold.
The wife buys this plastic tub deal that has some really good lettuce mix in it from Wally World for cheap. But this thing my friend gave me is like 6 times bigger. It barely fits on half of our refrige shelf which is one of those huge double door deals that you can stack two cases of beer on a single shelf and still have room left over...
Like you I'm wondering where the hell the money is coming from.
They have been laying off thousands of teachers, closing schools etc.
But they have money for this?
Heard a snippet from a spokesperson: "We don't want to shame the poorer students so we decided to provide meals for ALL students free of charge.."...blah blah blah.
Can't we just kill all these people and move on?

Oh what wonderful looking words! Except that when you parse them, you see they mean that now rich kids get free lunch too. Which prompts the question, how exactly is this a master stroke of social justice? Well, here is your answer:
Haynes pointed out that not only does the option, called "community eligibility," eliminate a stigma that students can feel if they qualify for free lunch...
You see, now that the rich kids get an insulting handout too, there is no stigma. Since all kids are on the dole, all kids are created equal.
I tell you, Thomas Jefferson had nothing on today's liberals!
Why???????????????
(That’s it from me)
.
It would be nice if instead of giving all the kids a free lunch they would give them a decent education instead but that is asking way, way too much from Chump City.
Since the students aren’t buying the awful Mooshell Meals, they are giving them away. Many children will elect to go hungry or smuggle food in from outside.
If by college fund you mean weed, then yea.
“...he plans to put the $30 a week he was paying for his children’s lunches toward their college funds.”
Or weed or malt liquor.
My children attend private schools, but this is the case in several counties around my home in Florida.
They are happy now but wait until they find out that they are really “Moo food” and not really lunches at all!!!!
