Obama invokes waiver postponing US embassy relocation to Jerusalem

US President Barack Obama invoked a waiver on Wednesday postponing the relocation of the American embassy to Jerusalem for at least another six months.

Despite Congressional legislation mandating that the US move its mission to the Israeli capital, successive administrations dating back to the Clinton regime have used presidential authority to postpone implementation of the law by citing “national security interests.”

Jerusalem is not recognized as Israel’s capital, and the international community’s position is that its status is to be negotiated in talks between Israel and the Palestinians. Israel's annexation of the eastern half of the capital is also not recognized internationally.

The Palestinians seek a state with east Jerusalem as its capital, while Israel's official position is to keep the city united under its sovereignty.

US candidates often express their intention to move the embassy to Jerusalem from its current location in Tel Aviv, only to invoke the presidential waiver upon entering office.

Jeb Bush, a likely candidate for the Republican nomination for president in 2016, expressed support on Saturday for Jerusalem remaining undivided as Israel’s capital and for moving Washington’s embassy to the historic city.

Obama is breaking no promises here.

Republican Party Platform of 2000

The United States has a moral and legal obligation to maintain its Embassy and Ambassador in Jerusalem. Immediately upon taking office, the next Republican president will begin the process of moving the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Israel's capital, Jerusalem.

Republican Party Platform of 2004 Republicans continue to support moving the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Israel's capital, Jerusalem.

Had the Republican candidate kept his promise, this would have been very old news.

And yes, Bill Clinton supported the move, signed the bill, then invoked the waiver. Not an issue either party can be trusted on.

Yes, every 6 months since the bill was signed. Clinton-Bush-Obama, couldn't move the Embassy to Jerusalem. National security at risk. The Arab world loves us for it.

There have been bills proposed which eliminate the waiver. It's not like we're moving the Embassy to land which hasn't been part of Israel since 1948. We'll see if a Republican President will sign it. Or make the move, making a followup bill unnecessary.

Yeah, that’s what I meant.

And iirc, the determination that it’s a Nat’l Sec risk doesn’t prevent the Prez from establishing the embassy in Jerusalem, it simply gives them an out.

“We’ll see if a Republican President will sign it. Or make the move, making a followup bill unnecessary.”

Most likely Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker would sign that, if elected. But then, the pieces have already been put into place by our current putz for Jerusalem to suffer another ‘Benghazi’ on President Walker’s watch.

So, I’m torn...

As President Walker wouldn't need to sign anything, he could just move the Embassy per the legislation passed in 2 0 years ago. I think Romney would have moved the Embassy.

So much of what Obama has done is by fiat that the right President could undo a lot with relative ease. Even a Security Council resolution would require follow up efforts which a Republican President could block, but a significant amount of damage will be done to Israel.
