We Americans have no practical clue how diverse Europe is
The best we can do is north vs south ... or country vs city ...
We just have no way of referencing Europe

No worries — for instance, I live in Poland (not Polish, my wife is) and Poles are culturally closer to Italians or even Asians more than they are to north Germans or Scandanavians or English — family is important as is academic achievement
