A Northwestern University professor was accused of retaliation and investigated after students claimed an article she had written had a chilling effect on studentss ability to report sexual misconduct.
Writing on Friday in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Laura Kipnis describes an academic climate in which professors lay awake at night in fear of losing their careers over a single careless word or missed trigger warning. A new academic culture is rising in which hurt feelings are considered evidence of an attack. This hypersensitivity is being abetted by an expanding process of Title IX charges which allow anyone with an agenda or a grudge to go on the offensive against the faculty:
As I understand it, any Title IX charge thats filed has to be investigated, which effectively empowers anyone on campus to individually decide, and expand, what Title IX covers. Anyone with a grudge, a political agenda, or a desire for attention can quite easily leverage the system.
And there are a lot of grudges these days. The reality is that the more colleges devote themselves to creating safe spaces that new watchword for students, the more dangerous those campuses become for professors. Its astounding how aggressive students assertions of vulnerability have gotten in the past few years. Emotional discomfort is regarded as equivalent to material injury, and all injuries have to be remediated.

I am more aware than you can imagine and have voiced my opinion in faculty meetings. I made a comment in a meeting several years ago about the altar of political correctness, followed by a deafening silence. I looked around the room and several faculty members looked as if they had been gut-shot. I still laugh about it. Several came to me after the meeting and expressed their agreement in private, the cowards they were.
If it were really so true. Let them worry.
I agree. I went through engineering, and I had no problems with any of my ChemE or EE professors. They were professional, and appeared apolitical in class. My guess is that many were conservative/Republican.
Frankly, it has become an embarrassment to be a part of higher Ed. I retire in about 2 months and will be glad to get away from what was once an enjoyable pursuit of hard science, teaching professional students, and veterinary services.
I think they’re rightly reaping what they’ve sown.
Though I have never been a part of higher Ed, I can see your point of view. You can only control what you do. It isn’t your fault the liberal arts professors are nutjobs.
I’m sure you’ve probably been a good influence, and conveyed proper education, to a large number of students. Just remember that, not these liberal filth.
The Nazis, the Soviets and the Chinese did the same. These shrinking violets are more dangerous than we thought.
The professors have been creating little monster SJWs for years and now the little monster SJWs are coming to eat them?
Good.
Whatever happened to tort reform in the Republican agenda?
They have sown the wind.
It's right there in the agenda, just below "Smaller Government" and "Rule of Law" ... and just as important ... meaning, not important.
#safeplace.
Lawyers and judges rule.
LOL
China will wipe the floor of the wimpiest generation.
Liberal professors hoisted on their own pc-tards?
Schadenfreude moment.
Your precious and sacred Socialism/Progressivism has come back upon you. I hope it destroys the corrupt and bastardized theme of your entire existence and you along with it.
Nothing worse than supposedly educated adults teaching young minds the rotting, decaying lies of Socialism and Marxism as virtues to be embraced.
Tell them the only safe place is their mama’s basement and sent all the whiny babies home. They aren’t mature enough to be let out alone.
Those in academia played a huge part in creating this mindset. Let it eat them alive, they’ve had it coming for decades...
A few conservative students should charge their profs with microaggression when they rant against conservative values and for Obama/leftism in their classes. I bet that the charges would be dismissed, but it would expose the double-standard.
