NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) Ed Gilligan, the president of American Express, has died.
He was 55 years old.
Gilligan died after becoming ill on a flight from Japan to New York.
Gilligan was named the companys president two years ago and joined American Express in 1980 while still a student at New York University, according to the Wall Street Journal.
He was widely considered a possible successor to CEO Ken Chenault, WSJ reported.
Chenault made the announcement via a letter to Amex employees Friday:
With the heaviest of hearts, I must share some devastating news. Ed Gilligan President of our company and friend and inspiration to many inside and outside American Express became seriously ill on a flight home to New York this morning and has passed away.
This is deeply painful and frankly unimaginable for all of us who had the great fortune to work with Ed, and benefit from his insights, leadership and enthusiasm. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Lisa, and their four children Katie, Meaghan, Kevin and Shane. He was a proud husband and father, and his love for his family was evident in all that he did.

I wonder what the rates are for life insurance on a bankster. They sure seem to be shuffling off with regularity these days.

They are calling it a “corporate flight”. I’m guessing that means AmEx owns the bird. Curiouser and curiouser...
Blood clot. He should have taken aspirin and gotten up and moved around during the flight. I knew a woman, 54 years old, who died the same way on a long flight.
Man I picked the wrong day to watch “The Stand”!!
Nobody pinged Nully yet?
It worries me that you just may be correct.
