Successful Qatar bid for World Cup aroused suspicion among U.S. officials

In November 2010, former president Bill Clinton and then- Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. traveled to Zurich to lobby soccer’s world governing body in support of the U.S. bid to host the 2022 World Cup.

Soccer’s popularity was rising in the United States, and a successful bid would bring the most watched sporting event in the world back to the country for the first time in nearly three decades.

The Americans were not successful. Instead, Qatar — a small, wealthy emirate on the Persian Gulf — became the first Arab country to be awarded the event. Almost immediately, the decision to place a summer soccer tournament in a country where daytime temperatures in those months often exceed 120 degrees drew fierce criticism — and deep suspicion.

Even before Clinton and Holder had left Switzerland, there “was a lot of talk that the decision had been bought,” said a person with knowledge of the private conversations among U.S. officials in Switzerland.

Concern in 2010 about deep corruption in FIFA helped galvanize a burgeoning investigation into the international soccer organization and the way the World Cup is awarded. It was launched in the U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn, where Loretta E. Lynch, who this year became Holder’s successor, was starting her second term as U.S. attorney.

Now the picture clears.

The 0bamao was snubbed by FIFA. And Barry don't like that. So he decided to get his.

So he used the AG office in NYC, which has been the locale of other politically motivated prosecutions that Barry/Holder don't want tied too closely to the WH or DC.

And it just so happens that the appartchik in charge became the next AG.

What a coinky-dink!

It’s soccer. Why do we care?

If the article is true, look for a whirlwind of hell to come down upon the IOC for rejecting Chicago.

Let them have their World Cup in some dung heap in Africa or Muslim hellhole... Somalia fits the bill nicely. I doubt many in the US give a rat’s posterior about the World Cup.

Because the 0bamao cared.

And you cared enough to share your own special feelings.

Thanks FRiend.

And for the record, I can't stand soccer.

But don't you find it just a little interesting that an acting US AG was lobbying for the World Cup with Billy Boy, and when it didn't work out, his underling launches a 5-year criminal investigation? And that underling then goes on to become AG?

If you don't find that interesting, fine.

But keep sharing those anti-soccer digs. I'm right with you all the way.

Yes I think it is interesting. I did not mean my “who cares” toward you. I just think it is a weird focus when we have so many bigger problems.

...look for a whirlwind of hell to come down upon the IOC for rejecting Chicago.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

It is a weird focus. Really weird. And it only makes sense if its personal.

This president has a lot of vendettas. This is one of them.

Pretty sure we already knew. Especially since some of the allegations go back to ‘94. One guy got busted last year and he rolled over, that’s really the cause of all this. Now the question is how many of the guys that just got arrested will rollover too?

Exactly. From the Daily Mail:

Clinton Foundation took at least $1,250,000 from Qatar and World Cup committee embroiled in soccer bribery scandal - and up to $100,000 from FIFA itself

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3099839/Clinton-Foundation-took-1-250-000-Qatar-World-Cup-committee-implicated-FIFA-bribery-scandal.html

“The fast-moving FIFA bribery scandal now has a Clinton connection, after news that the nation of Qatar and its 2022 World Cup organizing committee - and even FIFA itself - donated between $1.3 million and $5.55 million to the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation.”

“The scandal-hit football world authority is listed by the foundation as having handed over at least $50,001 and as much as $100,000 to the Clinton's controversial organization in a direct cash injection at some point before 2014.”

My guess is that FIFA learned about the NY AG investigation, and paid money to the Clintons in the hope (or promise?) that the dogs would be called off.
