OKLAHOMA CITY — Ben Carson won the straw poll at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference Saturday, demonstrating his popularity among conservative activists at one of the party’s traditional presidential cattle call events.
Carson, a former surgeon who formally launched his underdog campaign this month with an appeal to the GOP’s tea party wing, finished first with 25 percent. He was followed by Scott Walker, who received 20 percent, and Ted Cruz at 16 percent. Chris Christie and Rick Perry tied at 5 percent, with Jeb Bush narrowly behind. Marco Rubio tied with Bobby Jindal and Rand Paul at 4 percent.

If Ted Cruz had made it in person he probably would have won it again.
This clearly demonstrates the lack of significance of such exercises.

I’m sure you are right. Cruz’s absense created a vacuum that Carson filled. I have to wonder, also, if the fact that this was a Southern Conference didn’t prompt people to want to show their inclusiveness and make Dr. Carson welcome? Just a thought.
This clearly demonstrates the lack of significance of such exercises.I note that online voting was permitted in this SRLC straw poll. Insurgent campaigns in years past exploited online polling in the CPAC straw poll and others.
Whatever, my congrats to Ben Carson. My time and donations are committed to Ted Cruz.
I think Carson is a nice man. Carson has an incredible personal story. I have the impression that he has a good heart and he couldn’t have accomplished what he has in life without being very intelligent.
His ‘breakfast speech’ in the presence of Obama was brilliant, accurate and courageous.
However, I think he has a soft belly and I would never vote for him in a presidential race. I do not trust him on a few of the most significant issues - gun rights - illegal immigrants - homosexual garbage. In time, he may eventually evolve, but he is not ready.
Last but not least, and I expect it to sound racist, in todays environment and present state of this country, I will not vote for a Black candidate. There are many conservative Blacks that I respect and admire, but I have not seen one that I could vote for, except perhaps Allen West.
