His appointment was important enough to make it on the Vatican News site.

I would think the Pope would realize that this man is controversial because of the fact that EWTN would not cover a youth conference last year because this priest was scheduled to speak. So it's not like this priest is quiet about his views, if EWTN objected to this man before the appointment, believing this priest to be at “sharp variance to Catholic teaching.”

Making the Vatican News Site is like making the AP wire. They have to put stuff up every day to keep their jobs. Yes, it is one of the thirty most newsworthy things to happen in Rome on a given day, but the Pope doesn’t have time to spend hours on each of the thirty most newsworthy things that happen each day.

Do you really think that this Pope keeps track of what decisions Catholic News Agencies make and why? The man is not omniscient. If the Pope was known to consult EWTN before making all of his appointments, this would be relevant.
