Marquette cuts ties with director of center that hosted cop killer mural

MADISON, Wis. — In the wake of a public relations nightmare over a campus mural glorifying a cop killer, Marquette University has cut ties with director of its Gender and Sexuality Resource Center.

“Susannah Bartlow is no longer an employee with Marquette University,” said University Spokesman Brian Dorrington told Marquette Wire. “We will work with the Center’s advisory board to search for a new director so that we can continue to grow the important programs in the Center.”

Marquette administrators had the mural of black militant Assata Shakur (formerly known as JoAnne Deborah Chesimard) removed Sunday evening, but not until, ironically, long-time Marquette political science professor John McAdams broke the story on his “Marquette Warrior” blog.

McAdams has been suspended from teaching since November, when, in his blog, the political conservative and frequent critic of Marquette administration criticized a graduate student teacher who wouldn’t allow a student in her philosophy class to voice his opposition to same-sex marriage.

On Monday, just hours before McAdams’ blog post went national, Marquette administration released a statement saying it just became aware of the mural that was “created and displayed in a remote area of campus.” The mural has been up since March.

“This is extremely disappointing as the mural does not reflect the Guiding Values of Marquette University. It is being removed immediately. We are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the mural and will take appropriate action,” administration said in a press release.

Next to the image of Shakur, a former member of the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army, reads a couple of her quotes, including this one: “No one is going to give you the education you need to overthrow them.”

Shakur remains on the FBI’s “Most Wanted” list in Cuba, where she has lived under the protection of the communist government since 1984.

The general defense, particularly from the sorority that worked with the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center to “determine a theme and imagery for the mural” is that Shakur’s background wasn’t thoroughly researched.

That explanation would seem to ring hollow. As McAdams points out on his blog, it appears Bartlow signed a petition at change.org demanding President Obama remove Shakur from the “Most Wanted Terrorists” list.

It was Marquette administration, of course, that hired Bartlow.

In the broader scope, Bartlow’s dismissal raises another question: Has the university again violated its contractual obligation on academic freedom?

In early February, Marquette began the process to terminate McAdams tenure.

McAdams’ asserts Marquette has a contractual obligation to respect the academic freedom of its faculty, something administrators blatantly did not do when they suspended him and moved to fire him for blogging his thoughts.

Marquette says it’s looking to cut ties with McAdams based on what administrators believe was the professor’s violation of the university’s “Guiding Values,” the same values they seem to now be worried about in the promotion of the cop killer mural.

Will Bartlow raise the same academic freedom questions regarding her firing?

Of course this is the money quote in the last third of this article:

“It was Marquette administration, of course, that hired Bartlow. “

The Gender and Sexuality Resource Center needs to be eliminated.

Gender and Sexuality Resource Center
How the hell did America ever become one of the greatest countries known to man until we had Gender and Sexuality Resource Centers? Sickening.

Silly. They don’t want to pay it back. They want the taxpayers to do so.

Its way past time for Catholic adults to take over Marquette and the other Catholic universities in this country. The leftists currently in charge will destroy them.

This may sound, well, idiotic but why would a Catholic University have a group that calls themselves “Gender and Sexuality Resource Center”?
