Rap mogul Jay Z has quietly used his wealth to post bail for people arrested in protests across the United States against police excesses, an author close to him said.
Dream Hampton, a writer and activist who worked with Jay Z on his 2010 memoir "Decoded," made the revelations in a series of messages on Twitter that she later deleted but were reproduced by the hip-hop magazine Complex.
"When we needed money for bail for Baltimore protesters, I... hit Jay up, as I had for Ferguson (and he) wired tens of thousands" of dollars within minutes, read one tweet.
She also tweeted that Jay Z and his pop superstar wife Beyonce wrote a "huge check" to support the burgeoning "Black Lives Matter" movement aimed at improving police treatment of African Americans.
Protests spread last year after a white police officer shot dead unarmed African-American teenager Michael Brown in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson.
Major demonstrations, some turning violent, erupted in recent weeks in Baltimore after another African-American man, Freddie Gray, died from a spinal injury sustained in police custody.
Hampton later wrote that she deleted the tweets because Jay Z "would be pi-issed to see I was offering evidence" that he is taking action.
The tweets appeared aimed at defending Jay Z and Beyonce, who have faced accusations from some activists that they have only paid lip service to causes without tapping into the couple's estimated $1 billion net worth.
One prominent critic has been Harry Belafonte, the calypso music giant who supported Martin Luther King's family financially during the Civil Rights Movement.
In a 2012 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Belafonte said that contemporary celebrities "have turned their back on social responsibility" and singled out Jay Z and Beyonce.

A curse upon civilization.
Trash.
I had to read up on that quote and where it came from. I had heard the name, but didn’t know the story. Now I do.
Yeah, but you won’t see Jay and Be-yon-ce invitin’ any of the brothahs back to hang at the crib wit them.
What lse would you expect from a rapper who wears NWO jewelry. Whatever he can do to advance the cause for Obama....
“do what thou wilt” - one of the commandments in the Satanic bible. It means do whatever you want to; no morals; no restraint. In the SB men are just higher forms of animals.
I’m knowledgeable in urban culture and hip-hop and rap, but not by interest. It’s what I grew up around. The “artists” run the show and make money doing it. The result is a soul-dead cult following. Some make it out to be a race issue. I don’t believe it is. It’s a cultural issue. I’ve met black Americans who are meritorious and stellar and I’ve reported to them both in the military and civilian world. For them, Jay Z is nothing but crap in their opinion.
Black men are being deprived of their greatest assent, that thing that provides purpose, resolve, understanding, compassion and a sense of worth beyond any mere material wealth.
Black men have had their progeny stripped from them, their children have been co opted by the state and they, the childless fathers, have been abandoned in a seething cauldron of nihilistic debasement.
I know what my children mean to me. My life would be diminished to mere existence w/o them.
I can understand the black man's anger but I believe it's aimed in the exact wrong direction and therefore merely redoubles its intensity.
Black men need to reclaim what is theirs; their children!
Protestors, or rioters and looters?
When was the last time you heard a black man mourning the loss of his children? The ones that weren’t aborted are mostly living in their momma’s house collecting Welfare while daddy is out making more kids and more baby mommas.
Their progeny is not being “stripped from them”. You couldn’t melt their progeny and pour them onto black men if they had to work to support them.
Yes, I know. I’m watching it play out where I live.
So I say, let's look at this from another angle; fathers that are cut-off from their children.
I live in the real world too, and the black guys that I know that have stuck around and raised their kids are assets to the community we all live in.
And they're raising good kids!
Seems to be (a phrase) just what Satan would suggest.
