The family of a 19-year-old Indian girl has been ostracised and fined 1.6 million rupees (15,932 pounds) by a village council after she rejected a marriage arranged when she was a baby, the girl and her parents said on Wednesday.
Santadevi Meghwal, from the western desert state of Rajasthan, said she was married off at 11 months old to a nine-year-old boy in her village, 60 km (37 miles) south of Jodhpur.
Meghwal became aware of her marriage at the age 16 and, with the support of her parents, refused to go and live with her husband and in-laws as they demanded.

As far as India seems to be socially advancing the further they seem to be likewise declining.
Why did her parents agree to marry her off at such a young age?
Did the parents of the boy want to guarantee him a wife, and have funds that the girl’s family wanted?
This is rather extreme even for a matchmaker society.
I’m sure pantsuit will be all over this in between perpetuating the 72 cents per male buck lie in this country
There is a cashier at a local grocery store here that is from India. She was forced to go back to India and marry a man she had never met. He eventually came here with her but he was a drunk and couldn’t hold a job. She was a sweet person, but before long she was seen at work with bruises, kept her head down, and was pregnant. Within a year of being here she had his child, had been beaten many times and was supporting his lazy a**. He could of killed other people as well, he was finally put in jail after his third DWI. I hope he’s gone for good. Everybody tried to help her but she refused to report him and while her parents seemed like decent people they refused to step in as she now “belonged to him.” The last I heard (when he was put in jail) the parents at least let her and the baby move back home.

Doesn’t get much younger than “baby”.
This story sickens me :-(
Dont ya just love family traditions
I’m going to guess that (like Muslims) the groom’s family has to put up a “bride price”, which the bride’s family must now refund if the marriage does not happen. Possibly the girl’s family needed the money.
Isn't multiculturalism just grand. . .you know, all cultures are equal, that no culture is better than another.
Considering the United States’ high divorce rates and high rate of out of wedlock kids....
Wiser matchmakers will wait to see what the children’s personalities are like. But it’s asking for trouble if the couple does not have a final veto power.
That is a shame the families sometimes dragoon partners like this, even in the USA (and it could easily also turn out the other way around, the woman is the cad).
Don’t they at least have a vague idea that “bad karma” comes their way by doing this, to put it in terms of their belief system?
