'War on police': Line-of-duty deaths rise amid racially-charged rhetoric, anti-cop climate

Police throughout the nation say they fear a growing anti-cop sentiment driven by a handful of racially-charged incidents is making their jobs more dangerous on the streets, where the number of officers killed in the line of duty is rising sharply.

High-profile cases involving police and black suspects from Missouri to Baltimore have prompted intense criticism of law enforcement, from not only activists but the media and even the White House, leaving law enforcement officers alienated and angry, say cop advocates.

Cruickshank and other law enforcement advocates worry that what they see as an anti-cop climate is killing morale in police departments of every size.

“After 20 years of incredible crime reduction accomplished by thousands of dedicated police officers, the public has become complacent now that they are safer," said Safir, who led the nation's largest police department from 1996-2000. "They have let the anti-police pundits and talking heads convince everyone from the president to the attorney general that police are racist and brutal.”

Safir says that the national mood over the past two decades has emboldened many criminals.

“As criminals see the police restrained by new laws, policy and regulations that restrict tactics like "stop and frisk" or "broken windows," they no longer fear the police and certainty of arrest,” Safir said. “While in the past, they would not carry their weapons because of fear of arrest, they now do, and therefore the opportunity for armed confrontations with police significantly increases.”

Many among the nation's approximately 800,000 federal, state and local police officers are questioning their career choice, said Jon Adler, president of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association.

I'm not so sure this is entirely accurate. It's not quite this black and white.

I worked with the police almost every day that I went to work for many years. Most of them were really decent people. There were a few lazy jerks. The attitude of the public will make or break our society. I am not sure that the police can overcome what will happen if the race baiters prevail. It would seem that we are in for a rise in violent crime. It is probably about time to get more range time in if you haven’t practiced for awhile.

Crime in New York City has gone dramatically up since those court cases involving police and blacks. It’s no wonder police are reluctant to go into areas where blacks feel they can kill police and get a medal from their friends.

I fell sure very few men will go into police work from now on - would you? I wouldn’t. I expect, in order to stay alive, they will become librarians or filing clerks or go into research of turtles and their life span - anything to stay alive for their families.

I think we are pretty much on our own now to protect ourselves/our family/our property.

I think this goes far beyond race.

The more accurate picture is the fact law enforcement at all levels, are simply part of government. And the distrust for government are widespread and escalating. From the bottom to the top.

To the extent that police cover for each other, they are all guilty.

They need to fix this...

“More troubling than plummeting morale are statistics that show police lives are in more danger than they have been in years. According to new preliminary data released by the FBI on Monday, the number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in 2014 nearly doubled to 51 from 27 the previous year. “

That is a highly misleading statistic. The 27 line of duty deaths in 2013 was (sadly) an anomaly, far lower than any previous year in recent memory. 51 is (again, sadly) consistent with previous years.

Obviously even one line of duty death is too many, but looking only at 2013 and 2014 leads to misleading results.

Note that it is not CCW folks shooting the cops.

Even though cops by and large hate ccw folks and believe only they should be armed.

I agree with you on that especially within certain demographics, but currently the race baiters are whipping up a lot of trouble that is threatening all of our safety. This is largely independent from the mistrust of government.

It's hard to disassociate, as many of the folks down in the camps and neighborhoods say the same, that they no longer trust and haven't for decades. Then again, with that particular group some of what they claim is fabricated but some is legitimate. Many from other groups, rather than burn or loot, express their distrust and contempt for government other ways. The recent Bundy standoff is an excellent example.

Negro leaders want African-Americans to police themselves and want PDs to hire many more black officers. Nationally, police and fire entrance screening has been incredibly relaxed for Affirmative Action candidates, who would never otherwise be hired. It has literally come to the point in many areas that white applicants are severely discriminated against.

Just a note of warning. Some historians actually theorize that The Klu Klux Klan originally got going because during Reconstruction, primarily as a reaction to the perception that unqualified Negro LEOs were oppressing white Southerners.

Every social action has a social reaction.

I agree. The militarization and the o so Patriotic patriot act transformed even local police into a military movement. They roll out APCs and heavy body armor. Are our cities a war zone? This causes an escalation in the criminal element, they have body armor and heavy weapons. I think the police have overstepped their sworn duties... or is it the thought crimes that have been implemented?
Either way, the police and their union buddies are simply standing by while crime happens now.. typical union behavior.
It doesn’t help when the cops themselves are not always following the laws.
That being said, I know good cops and bad cops, I know good doctors and bad doctors, I know good and bad in lots of things.
Let the LEOs be under the control of the local sheriff, duly elected, purge the union from the table and go back to the hard stuff, enforcing the laws fairly and consistently.

That was the NJ police reaction to race issues; “stand down” when dealing with blacks (unless they were raiding in non-black areas). It has made the cities violent hellholes where many business have followed the whites to greener pastures.

Police work will always attract plenty of applicants; it is a union job with great benefits often offering retirement before 50 years of age (while many Americans are looking at working well into their 70s). The fact that they DON’T have to interact with “the community” is a bonus, not a negative thing.

Tossing flash bangs into baby cribs during botched raids have a part in this as well. Not all the criticism is race related. Nor is all the heightened scrutiny unmerited.

Speaking for myself, I don’t have much use for their services.

“Even though cops by and large hate ccw folks and believe only they should be armed.”

That is simply not true. I deal with them and speak with them frequently. While their political leadership may say one thing, the vast bulk of beat cops and working cops are fine with guns and gun owners.

I don’t know where you live but where I’m at the cops have no trouble with CCW holders. The Local LEO’s will readily admit that CCW helps prevent crime.

Before going further, yes, there are bad cops. With that said, even bad cops don’t deserve to be “executed”. Odumbo has the blood of every dead cop on his hands as he sits idly by doing NOTHING to stop the non-sense, instead, he promotes it by doing just that, NOTHING!

That's right. Unions have been doing this for hundreds of years. Only now there are more unionized government employees than exist in the entire private sector America.

They know how to put the screws to opponents.
