WINDSOR, Ont. - A new bridge between Windsor, Ont., and Detroit will be named after hockey legend Gordie Howe.
Howe, who is now 87, was born in Floral, Sask., and came to be known as "Mr. Hockey."
The still-to-be built Gordie Howe International Bridge is expected to be operational in 2020.
The Windsor-Detroit corridor is the busiest commercial land crossing between the two countries and the border has long been a bottleneck.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the announcement today along with Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder at the river separating Canada and the U.S.
Harper praised Howe as a proud Canadian who led the Detroit Red Wings to four Stanley Cup wins and built goodwill between the two countries.
THE INTERNATIONAL TRADE CROSSING BRIDGE....sounds Ugly! Painted Army Surplus Green....with guard towers every fifty yards or so
Good for Snyder. Some kinds of money, you don’t need. The actual costs are too high.
Sucks that we have to rely on charity from Canada to build actual vital infrastructure but the Canadian stipulations are straightforward and simple. All tolls collected will go to Canada till its paid off. They need the bridge and have had their side of the river prepped for it for decades. It will cross just north of Zug Island.
It is kind of funny that with all the screeching from the Democrats about infrastructure, you hear nothing but crickets about this.
How close will the bridge be to the Woodward/ Griswold area of downtown Detroit? How about The Ren-Cen area or the lovely and pristine Belle Isle, close to that?
Awesome!!!
LOL, it’ll need rails between each lane, and the watch for ice signs could be really creative...
Toll gates like hockey sticks.
I think all of Windsor is an Adult Entertainment Venue...
But Canada is a white man’s country...at least for now. So it’s ok.
My cousin who was up that way used to make references to visiting the Windsor Ballet . . .
Maybe they could get the Hanson Twins to dedicate it.
Good one!
Well, hockey is a “type” of ballet, yes?
sooo...
lemmee see ifin i gots this straight..
last week we the people of michiganstan turn down a whopping tax increase for road funding because the state has no money to fix our roads...
this week we celebrate the new bridge that we the people are gonna end up paying for...
where did the cash come from???
NOT FIXING OUR DAMN ROADS...
TheGovernment of Canada is finaning the entire cost of the bridge and will collect all of the toll revenue.
Thanks for the ping; post. HOORAY Gordie! I spent many nights Standing Room Only at Olympia, some with a high school girlfriend who referred to Mr. Hockey as Howie Gordon.
It was on the ballot as a proposal in 2012 I believe it was and we aren’t paying for it.
I’m okay with this. The glory days of hockey.
“I havent researched this possibility but I truly hope that the bridge wasnt built by the same people who botched the san francisco bay bridge.”
If you read the story you would see that it has not been built yet.
