WILLIAM MacDonald, known as The Mutilator and NSWs oldest and longest-serving prisoner, has died in Sydneys Prince of Wales Hospital.
MacDonald, who would have been 91 next month, terrorised Sydney in the early 1960s, killing four men in city parks and one earlier in Brisbane by luring them into dark places and then mutilating their genitalia.
Many believe he was Australias first high-profile serial killer.
His victims, mostly derelicts, were stabbed dozens of times with a long-bladed knife before MacDonald would cut off their penis and testicles.
Between 1961 and 1962, MacDonald was responsible for a series of grisly murders in Sydney before being caught in Melbourne in May 1963.
Born in England, he arrived in Australia in 1955, when, soon after arriving, he was charged for touching a detectives penis in a public toilet.

He himself was a supporter of capital punishment for the worst cases of murder and stated numerous times that he should have been hanged, and that if he was ever released he would kill again. If not for his own statements, it's fairly likely he would have been released in the mid 1990s - it's chilling when the only thing that kept a man in prison was his own honesty about the fact that they should not let him out.
For students of forensic history, the case is notable as one of the early successful uses of 'Identi-Kit' facial composition to identify a killer and the images developed were actually pretty accurate (especially compared to some composites or police artists versions I've seen).
The Identikit pictures are very interesting ... went wrong around the hairlines, but other than that, looked an awful lot like him.
Congrats to Australia for keeping him locked up until he died.
90 years old? Prison in Australia must provide very good conditions. I would think this unusual.
Although a fiend, the compulsion to do what he did was probably huge. Must have been hard to tell the truth that he would do it again.
if all prisoners would be so honest, we could save lots of trouble :)
Australia had a prisoner, Bill Wallace, who made it to 107 - he was Australia's oldest living man and second oldest living person when he died. He was incarcerated from 1926 until 1989, having avoided a death sentence for murder on the grounds of insanity.
Modern prisons here are designed to have pretty good conditions - but he had survived the older style as well.
Food and shelter, medical care ... add good genes, and you have a really old inmate or two.
Transgender Enabler
Just ahead of his time.
It wasn’t mutilation, it was corpse gender reassignment surgery.
3000 or so native Tasmanians await him in the hereafter...
Id have given them congrats if they executed him a way long time ago. He had free room and board for 4 decades plus medical care.
Australia is a VERY VIOLENT country.
Free medical care, balanced diet, etc. Long-lived prisoners would not be unusual if not for prison drugs and violence.
Baloney.
5 decades.
I wouldn’t think it more violent than any other continent on which humans dwell. Why do you think so?
“I wouldnt think it more violent than any other continent on which humans dwell. Why do you think so?”
I didn’t say it was. I just get sick of the US being called violent by all of those lily-white countries that happen to have the demographic that doesn’t believe in looting and shooting.
So I have some fun quoting Beverly Hills Cop every time an article like this comes up.
Ah. :) Carry on.
Thanks, it’s fun.
Ah - gay love......

'I get it.'
