Celebrations have broken out in Burundi's capital Bujumbura over reports of a coup against the government of President Pierre Nkurunziza.
The developments came after an army officer reportedly announced on Wednesday that Nkurunziza and his government had been dismissed.
Major-General Godefroid Niyombare, who was fired by Nkurunziza as intelligence chief in February, made the announcement at a military barracks, reports said.
He was surrounded by several other senior officers from the army and police, Reuters news agency reported.
"Regarding President Nkurunziza's arrogance and defiance of the international community which advised him to respect the constitution and Arusha peace agreement, the committee for the establishment of the national concord decide: President Nkurunziza is dismissed, his government is dismissed too," Niyombare was quoted as saying.

"Nkurunziza is currently in Tanzania where he is due to meet the leaders of the five-nation East African Community (EAC) - made up of Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda as well as Burundi."
Sounds like a winner...............
“You are the weakest link, good-bye.”
I don’t follow the politics of that region particularly closely. Which side in this fight is the one that honors property rights, will establish sound legal institutions, favors limited but competent government, honors religious freedom and freedom of expression, and will pursue democratic representation for citizens?
Will this kick off another round of Hutu vs Tutsi ructions, even though the two rivals for power identify as Hutus?
Neither, it seems.
Looks like it’s going to be anther Tutsi’s/Hutu civil War.
Should we be happy?
Should we be sad?
I haven’t thought about Burundi since, well, I suppose I’ve never thought about Burundi at all.

Probably neither, this is a black-run, black majority country, always destined for failure no matter which way things go.
Probably just another case of my tribe gets the loot vs. no, my tribe gets the loot!
That would NONE OF THE ABOVE since it is in sub-saharan Africa. (Of course, plus-Saharan Africa is no great shakes when it comes to those things either.)
And before any of you go off on me, my boots have been on that ground many times for mission trips. There are no operating governments in sub-Saharan Africa that respect individual liberty the way Americans used to do.
It wouldn’t be a day that ends in Y if there wasn’t a coup in Africa or when a “president” tries to violate a constitution to stay in power.
Some poor network news reader is gonna hurt himself over that one.
Got the news this morning (I’m in DC for a private equity conference). The situation is quite volatile a d there’s a lot of dry tinder laying about waiting for the right spark to light the whole shebang to high heaven. It’s hard to tell what will happen (it could all fizzle and the only outcome being a short term mess), or it could properly erupt.
If communal clashes break out, I'm guessing that the supposedly deposed leader is the Tutsi standard bearer (being half-Tutsi himself), perhaps because he appointed many Tutsis to his cabinet, despite the fact that he was part of the Hutu rebel group that overthrew the Tutsi regime.

I’d like to know which side represents that here in the US!
ha! very good point
Maybe this is one foreign affair we can stay out of.
But probably not.
Nkurunziza
He must be from Czechoslovakia.
