Ben Carson’s Wonk Deficit: How Quickly Can He Get Up to Speed on Complex Policy Issues?
National Review ^ | 05/13/2015 | Jim Geraghty

How quickly can Dr. Ben Carson get up to speed on the details of the complex policy issues that command a president’s attention?

That’s the make-or-break question surrounding Carson, a brilliant neurosurgeon who had never run for office before announcing a presidential bid last week, and who remains a rookie in most policy realms other than health care.

For those who wonder whether Carson has done his policy homework, the bad news is that Carson’s campaign team has few staffers specifically focused on hammering out a detailed policy agenda for the campaign. Carson hasn’t yet assembled a “kitchen cabinet” of loyal advisors with policy expertise who could serve as a talent pool for a future Carson administration, the way some other candidates have.

“While we have had numerous conversations with leading domestic and foreign experts, we have not settled on a formal team, at this time,” says Doug Watts, communications director for Carson America, in a statement to National Review. He adds that an “initial congregation” is in the works.

Yes, one of the two GOP presidential candidates with no political experience doesn’t yet have a policy team, just as he begins to be quizzed on policy details on the stump. Meanwhile, since January, the official and unofficial campaigns of more experienced GOP political figures have been snapping up conservative policy experts like they’re in a wonk free-agent-signing period.

I would like to read the article, but lately on NRO - they drop my browser after about ten seconds. Has NRO made some changes to their site?

RE: Has NRO made some changes to their site?

Yes. Their look and feel is different.

You might want to upgrade your browser.

The point of the article however, is on the title.

There are many people whom I would never trust to do Brain Surgery on my child.

There are a precious few in whom I COULD place my trust to do it right.

There are many people in whom I could never place my trust to govern my Republic in a fallen, evil world filled with terrorists, muslims, and communists.

There are a precious few in whom I can place my trust to do it right.

As I tell my music students (who want to play every instrument under the sun), “Find out what you do best and focus on THAT.”

Carson’s a would-be gun-grabber, and is a NO vote from my perspective. I don’t give a crap if he is a wonk or not.

So, what kind of people would you trust to govern our Republic?

Does Dr. Ben Carson qualify as one? (compared to say, Hillary or Obama ).

False dichotomy. Carson is either qualified or not - the "lesser evil" BS is offensive, FRiend.

Evil is evil. Perhaps you like to rate evil.

I simply avoid it.

But he stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.

Well, OF COURSE, compared to Hillary or Obama.

And, of course, if he were the only person running against Hillary, (or even against Jeb!), Of Course I would vote for him.

I respect Dr. Carson immensely, but I think we need a more experienced and more Constitutionally centered front runner.

But if he were the one running against the democraps, I would DEFINITELY vote for him.

I'll pass on any person who decides they want to:

1) Run for president then
2) Get up to speed on complex issues

Because they have the necessary order flipped.

Simple: Run for a lower office, first. I’d happily support Sen. Carson or Gov. Carson.

Complex policy issues requiring wonk status???? Dr. Carson hasn’t even wrapped his mind around one of the shortest, most plainly stated amendments in the Bill of Rights! He may be a brilliant physician and surgeon and I certainly admire his ability to forthrightly state a plain case in front of the First Hypocrite at the National Prayer Breakfast. That, however, does not add up to presidential candidate that will receive a vote from me.

I’m not sure if I’d support him for Senator... but I certainly won’t support any POTUS candidate who has never won another election. It is not an entry level position.

Neurosurgeons are brilliant people and very busy people. They are not the most socialized (politically correct) or politicized people.

My nephew reads the Wall Street Journal a few times a week but he’s in surgery most of his day. When he’s not in surgery, he has conferences and professional reading constantly because his field is improving and changing all the time. People need him to fix them badly and he has all he can do to keep up with his children and wife. He calls my husband for input on presidential elections.

Dr. Carson may have lived this life and it is full, worthy and brilliant...but maybe not full in other ways or a balanced way. I don’t know.

I reject the premise.
That is only an issue for self-centered micromanaging megalomaniacs.
Dr Carson doesn't give the impression that he's a non-golfing Barrack Hussein.

The smarts to choose the proper cabinet and advisors is paramount.

I posit that Dr Carson has the smarts to deal with that simple problem and reality.
