Nothing suspicious like a bomb or incendiary found so far. There is a report of a crater.

Yes, but it has to be said with a well practiced perfectly straight face.

Great. Amtrak runs on a track across the street from my house. Old neighborhood.

Was suppose to upgrade to 60Hz back in the 70’s but was shelved as too costly.

Portable derails are not designed to be effective at high speeds. The new ones are fabricated and are of rather chintzy construction. The serrated back portion is really only effective on wood crossties, not concrete ties like on the NEC. Still, setting a derail (properly) on the outside rail of a 50 MPH, 4° curve would probably cause a derailment.
I am mostly concerned about the post in this tread saying that any eyewitness on the scene last night reporting not only a crater, but an FBI presence keeping people away from it... yet, immediately, there is a narrative saying that this was definitely not terrorism.
Somewhere out there I am sure there is a YouTube video, or a Draw Mohammed event that this might be blamed on.... but the first agenda to fill will be to say that our transportation infrastructure is crumbling, or there was some "failure in training"... or since most of these injuries and deaths were a result of people and objects flying all over the place inside the car.... some Federal edict will come out with even more ridiculous crashworthiness directives, full carbody interior hazard evaluation studies and retrofitting... and of course the ever popular "This would not have happened if we had Positive Train Control" narrative.
I look forward to the facts here.
Having been on-site doing investigation for many, MANY derailments, it's not that difficult to put the pieces together if it was a mechanical, operational, or track failure.

I know all that, guess I didn’t read his post thoroughly. Plenty of light rail around here so I suppose my mind went directly there.

Pretty hard to get agreement to spend ma$$ive amounts to upgrade something that’s working well enough.

Not terrorism.
Swamp gas. Republican budget cuts.

Hopefully everything comes out and we don’t get into a TWA 800 type of coverup by the Feds.

Get the federal government out of EVERY aspect of transportation. Let the insurance industry use the marketplace to make and operate better and safer systems more economically!

But also ISIS called for “lone wolf” terror attacks. That could include transportation related attacks.
