At least 50 people were hurt after an Amtrak train derailed in Philadelphia Tuesday night, according to officials.

matt04 is correct when he says "the rail functions as a return for the electricity." The power comes from the catenary (in other words, the 'hot' side - the black wire in your house wiring.) The rail is the ground, or as matt04 said return - the white wire in your house wiring.
You need a return for it to work, for the same reason there are two prongs on your basic electrical plug at your house...
Courtesy ping to you, CedarDave, for my mention of your post #213.
Also from other thread, 2ndDivisionVet has update; all 7 train cars went off the tracks:

Yes.
I figured they'd find a way to blame that fracced super slippery fracced highly volatile fracced explosive fracced Bakken (did I mention fracced?) oil by now.
Like, maybe someone spilled a drop or two on the tracks?
Oh well, enough sarcasm.
Prayers up for the dead, injured, and their families/loved ones.
When I was in Poland in '92, my uncle's car had a manual choke. I think it was a Fiat, though. My cousin was driving a WWII motorcycle that had been in continuous use since the war.
I wish all liberals could experience the glories of communism first hand. "The worker's paradise." My father never got tired of calling it that.
There have been a few high profile tanker accidents involving oil carrying trains lately, and the push continues to restrict oil shipments--which will effectively restrict production (the oil travels by rail partly because there is not enough pipeline capacity). Funny, how despite oil shipments by rail have been going on for a few years now, until the attempts to ban fraccing failed to pass scientific muster, there were no major fiery crashes.
Or rather keeping it secret and away from public knowledge.
Well not surprised, do not want to “offend” the local Muslim community.
Would not surprised me if someone did some “damage” on the track area that could have made this derailment, but this is just my guess.
I remember when I used to ride the trains that was what I was told, a number of years ago.
Would not surprise me if this gets treated just like that TWA 800 jet incident. The feds do not want to “offend” the Muslim community, just coming off the “draw Muhammed” incident.
Would not surprised me. They have been warning us about calling out “lone wolves”.
I give the Mayor a lot of credit for doing a very good job with the presser.
No fan of the Mayor myself, but from watching on Fox late last night, he sounded like he presented what he knew at the time.
I will be waiting for the credible “Henry Johnson Scientific Explanation” of how the train flew off the tracks.
which also has a link to an even earlier mention of stolen derailers
Uncle George http://www.freerepublic.com/~unclegeorge/ posting comment to none other than choo-choo man his'self, Willie Green
Thanks P.O.E.,What a mess.Still no cause.People missing, they are trying to lift up the trains now.So far 6 dead.
and now I am recalling when Ed Schultz blamed the Minnesota Bridge Collapse on the Republicans. He probably would pull this stunt again, only he knows better “To Wait For The Facts To Come In First” before blaming Republicans.
