Amid a volcanic alert, satellite data show that a 200-meter-diameter area of the Owakudani hot spring district at Mt. Hakone, south of Tokyo, has been lifted by up to 6 centimeters, the Geospatial Information Authority said Friday.
The upthrust is believed to have occurred between April 18 and Thursday, said the GIA, which analyzed data from the Daichi-2 observation satellite, launched in May last year by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.
The satellite already observed a 10-centimeter land uplift in areas near craters of Mt. Ontake after the central Japan volcano erupted last September, leaving 57 people dead and six still missing, agency officials said.
With any luck, that's all that's going to happen this time. The videos of the steam vents going off are pretty impressive, in any case.
That’s the kind of uplifting experience that no one wants.
Where is Al Gore?

Hakone Matata.
Hey, a 2.4 inch rise in three weeks is pretty scary!
They’re losing a ton of tourism there this year, but the affected area is really quite small
No....
The correct pronunciation is: GODZIIIIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAA!!
Please make a note of it.

That a satellite could detect a 2.4 inch uplift is scary. And they say they aren’t window peeping.
Hopefully they are watching Yellowstone, not that it would matter to the po folk, only ones guaranteed to get out on time are the rich folk and politicians...............but I repeat myself.
Hakone is beautiful, it was one of our favorite places to go on the weekend when we lived in Atsugi. Many fond memories.
