Writing on Twitter, Herzog asserted that "the government is irresponsible, unstable, ungovernable. It is a government of national failure. A government of extortion, narrow and weak, that will not promote a thing, and will soon be replaced by an alternative of hope and responsibility."

Dream on. Its a stable government of like-minded partners.

It should last the full four years.

One of the quisling sell-out type losers complaining he didn’t win. He may have been able to get into the governing coalition but apparently felt he couldn’t support defending his country ( preferring to continue giving it away to those sworn to murdering him and all the rest of his people). It’s no wonder he wound up outside the coalition.

Herzog, like Bibi, is American-educated, distinguished military, and comes from a kind of aristocratic family. Not much personality, although that can be a plus in parliamentary systems.

A government with 61 seats out of 120 is inherently unstable. Any one of the 4 or 5 coalition partners can topple it at any time.

Agree. I give this government 12-14 months.

Perhaps not a hypothetical question: How many Obama bucks will it take to topple this government? After all, Obama doesn’t care if he spends the US into oblivion so a few billion to dispose of one of the few men who will stand up to him is small change.

Nah, Obama won’t have to spend a dime. If the new Israeli government collapses it will be from internal forces. My money’s on Bennett followed by one of the religious right partners.

Is HOPE and RESPONSIBILITY any thing like HOPE and CHANGE?

Yeah, it’s too bad Lieberman pulled out, that would have made it 67.

Lieberman can still join later, no?

I guess so.

But why expect him to?

He seems like one of those big ego jag-offs.

In theory, yes. But all of the cabinet slots have been allocated to other parties, so, as a practical matter, very unlikely. But he could still support the Netanyahu coalition from outside, by voting against any future no confidence motion.

Let's say that the coalition is about to break up because one or more of the religious parties want to leave. If Lieberman doesn't join the coalition, Netanyahu would have to call new elections, and the results may not be good for Lieberman (his party might lose seats, or a pro-appeasement coalition might win). Why wouldn't he join the coalition so as to forestall such a calamity for his party?

My gut says he wants another election in hopes of winning more seats.
