FBI Overlooked Texas Terrorist’s Violent Tweets — ‘There are So Many Like Him’
Breitbart ^ | 05/06/2015 | by Frances Martel

An unidentified “senior law enforcement official” tells the New York Times that, while the FBI had been aware of Garland, Texas jihadist attacker Elton Simpson for nearly a decade, they did not follow his violent, pro-jihad tweets as closely as they could have because “there are so many like him” that the agency is overwhelmed.

Despite Simpson’s public calls for jihad on Twitter, one law enforcement official told the New York Times that this did not make him unique or demanding of special monitoring. “The ISIS guys are talking to these wannabes on Twitter all day long,” the official told the New York Times. “It’s like the devil is sitting on their shoulder saying, ‘Come on, they’re insulting the prophet, what are you going to do about it?’”

The official added that “There are so many like him that you have to prioritize your investigations.”

United States attempts to counter ISIS recruiting online previously have greatly failed. “Think Again, Turn Away,” a program by the Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications consisting mostly of a government Twitter account scolding jihadists in public tweets, has largely been considered a failure, with the head of SITE Intelligence Group calling it a “gaffe machine,” “distressing,” and “embarrassing.” In February, the New York Times reported that President Obama had ordered a major overhaul of both the center and the program, focusing on not just dissuasion on social media, but “coordinat[ing] and amplify[ing] similar messaging by foreign allies and nongovernment agencies, as well as by prominent Muslim academics, community leaders and religious scholars who oppose the Islamic State… and who may have more credibility with ISIS’ target audience of young men and women than the American government.”

“Think Again, Turn Away” is part of the Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications department at the State Department. Launched in 2011, it employs 50 people to specifically counter terrorism activity on social media. The YouTube channel was only developed in July after IS conquered Mosul, Iraq.

Despite the money spent on them, these videos, compared to IS propaganda videos, often fail; firms that track terrorism videos criticize the videos from the State Department.

“The problem with this video is the same problem that seems to happen over and over again with these type of initiatives,” said Evan F. Kohlmann, chief information officer of Flashpoint Global Partners. “They don’t seem to have a clear picture of what audience they are trying to reach, or how to influence them.”

According to Kohlmann, the State Department forgets “most of the Westerners trying to join ISIS are actually enthused by videos of executions and suicide bombings, not deterred by them.”

And yet all we read about are the nice friendly "Americanized" Islamic adherents in nation.

Yeah, there probably are “so many like him,” and I for one do NOT want the FBI rounding up every person they have an inkling might someday in the future do something, lest they begin rounding up a large percentage of FReepers.

I very seriously doubt he was “overlooked” or that they lost track of him. My take was he was an informant who was using them instead of them using him. Besides, if there are no children to burn alive, or anyone to kill, the FBI loses interest quickly.

I wouldn’t want them “rounded up” but if they had followed him they would have discovered his communications with known terrorist. He already had a record of terrorism connections.

I don’t get what the big deal is about this. The local cop handled it great. You can’t follow every guy in the world that tweets something questionable. The best defense is as this one played down: Make sure your law enforcement has plenty of range time enabling them to dispatch these guys with all speed and accuracy.

I confess these two islamic rubes reminded me just a little of Jack black in Mars Attacks. Mr. Gung Ho never fired off a shot. Sure could field dress a rifle though. :)

Post on Facebook about your dedication to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, particularly the 2nd & 10th amendments.

Knock, knock. The men in black are here to “talk” with you.

They’re much too busy tracking the right-wing resistance to bother with a few Islamic crazies!

The FBI is a state-sponsored terrorist organization.

It attacks women, children, babies and senior citizens. If confronted by armed men, the FBI will run and crawl under slimy rocks.

Not your daddy’s FBI.
