Right, left unite to blast McConnell over Patriot Act move
The Hill ^ | 05/06/2015 | Julian Hattem

A coalition of advocacy groups from all sides of the political spectrum has joined forces to warn against Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) plan to renew expiring portions of the Patriot Act without changes.

Traditionally conservative organizations such as FreedomWorks and Gun Owners of America joined the American Civil Liberties Union, NAACP and dozens of other groups to warn the Senate majority leader against his “clean” reauthorization of the national security law.

“In the absence of meaningful reform, it is unacceptable to rubber stamp reauthorization of an authority that the government has used to spy on millions of innocent Americans,” the groups told McConnell and other leaders of Congress on Wednesday. “These bulk surveillance programs raise serious constitutional concerns, erode global confidence in the security of digital products, and are unnecessary for national security,” they added.

The backlash from both sides points to the perilous path for backers of McConnell’s effort, which is likely to engender opposition from liberal and conservative groups alike.

McConnell wants to extend without changes three provisions of the Patriot Act set to expire at the end of the month, including the section that the National Security Agency (NSA) has relied on to collect records about millions of Americans’ phone calls. Privacy advocates say that the NSA has used the program to invade people’s privacy, though intelligence officials maintain that it is necessary to track the communications of suspected terrorists and foreign spies.

Whichever Freeper posted awhile back that a Democrat getting McConnell’s seat would be a fair trade off for getting rid of him was right. I apologize if I denigrated you in anyway at that time for your remarks.

Mitch McConnel and John Boehner are far greater threats to the US than Barack Obama.

You just didn't understand how treacherous many of the KY Republicans have been for so long.

I’d rank them all evenly, with Obama slightly higher due to wielding the executive power. The two RINOs’ edge would be that some would still be fooled into thinking that they are in any way conservative still, with the word “moderate” having no meaning in this context.

McConnell may be wrong but I don’t believe he is evil and I suspect he knows more than anyone here about how successful the program has been. Just my opinion.

All these groups are of no importance. Only the Sultan’s desires are of moment. The Sultan’s minions will respond to their lord.

The US has taken away our freedoms at home and created mayham in so many places globally since 911. Our economy is in shambles. We're being over-run by invaders (many legally) who are now attacking us from within. We've never been less safe.

I wonder if we would be safer if the feds went back to doing only constitutionally mandated things and totally dropped the Patriot Act.

Boehner and McConnell’s are wholly derivative of the their lord, Sultan Hussein.

The kenyan has pulled the entire GOPe to the left. It’s foolish to think the beltway GOP will change their stripes even with a GOP POTUS. This is the new normal, unfortunately.

Man—That McConnell guy has really pi$$ed me off this time.

I guess that means it’s OK to shoot him.

Agreed. But that's never gonna happen.

That sucker is never going away as long as people like McCain and McConnell keep getting elected.

I’d rank them all evenly, with Obama slightly higher due to wielding the executive power.

Which wouldn't matter worth beans if Congress would have a spine:
Oh, the NSA has an illegal domestic espionage setup? Their funding is $0.
Oh, the IRS is politically targeting people — let's pass a flat tax, no deductions, no exemptions, no credits, no exceptions and reduce its funding to $10,000/yr.
Fast & Furious… we're going to dissolve the BATFE, FBI, ICE, and DEA as well as urge the DoJ to prosecute all former members who even so much as had knowledge of the operation.

The kenyan has pulled the entire GOPe to the left.

This is untrue; just look at the [in]actions on things the Republican party claims to care about, like border enforcement or the national debt.
The Republican party is just as much about statism and corruption as the Democrat party, they just tell their constituents a different story than the Democrats tell theirs.
