The British actor Nigel Terry has reportedly died aged 69.

The theater, TV and movie veteran died from emphysema on Thursday, The Guardian reported.

Terry, 69, who may be best remembered for playing King Arthur in the 1981 epic film “Excalibur,” performed alongside legends like Laurence Olivier, Katharine Hepburn and Peter O’Toole over the course of a career that spanned five decades, according to IMDb.

The Bristol native, who grew up in Cornwall, first appeared on the silver screen opposite Hepburn, O’Toole, Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton in the 1968 classic “The Lion in Winter,” the story of three sons’ rivaling bids to assume King Henry II’s throne in the 12th century.

He would not appear again in a movie until he took the iconic role as leader of the Knights of the Round Table in director John Boorman’s film 13 years later. That movie boasted Helen Mirren as Morgana, Liam Neeson as Gawain, Nicol Williamson as Merlin and a Wagner soundtrack performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

A wonderful film.

69 is too young.

He was especially good in The Lion in Winter as the young Prince John, played as a pimply faced scheming little scumbag.

It was an excellent movie. But I remember those two fatheads Siskel and Ebert giving it a thumbs down in favor of some goofy French flick. I saw both films. Excalibur was great, while the French pseudo-arty flick stank.

After that, S and E became perfect reverse barometers for me. Ebert especially was a sucker for snooty, arty (i.e. dull and boring) Euro-arty flicks.

Can’t go wrong with Wagner and Carl Orff. The Wagner fit perfectly the Arthurian myth. He was also in an episode of Dr. Who.

Ahhcrap. One of my favorite old movies. Loved the Merlin portrayal especially.

RIP to Mr Nigel, the "King Arthur for the 80's kids".
Please excuse my bad paraphrasing of Merlin. d:^)

Prince John: “If I were on fire I bet no one would stop to pee on me!”

Richard: “Let’s strike a flint and see!”

Wonderful film.
Watched it many times.
Also, Nicholas Clay in the role of Lancelot passed in 2000 at the age of 53.

And 53 doesn’t seem as old to me as it once did!
