You are misrepresenting what the other poster is saying. I just can’t figure out why.
You’re lying. Why?
The article states:
A police officer investigating a report of a home burglary mistakenly went to the wrong address and ended up killing a family's dog.
In order to have this discussion we have to assume that the article means what it says. Otherwise we may as well assume none of it is facts and simply discuss how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.
Yes, it's obvious that if he was given incorrect information then the responsibility lies elsewhere. But we are not a board of inquiry, we are people discussing what the article says. And it says he made a mistake.
See post # 31.
I read it.
In the example, yes you would be in trouble.
I think the officer’s ‘mistake’ (no matter what caused it) should be investigated and actions taken if necessary. (which is happening)
All I was saying is that I understand why the officer had to shoot the dog. Even if it was totally his fault, he did not want to have his ankle bitten off and did want to get home safe.
This case is not like the others where the cops shoot a dog just to keep it from barking and alerting any suspects.
I am just trying to make a distinction between this case and other cases where dogs are shot for NO GOOD REASON.
Maybe it was all his fault. There is certainly no further info stating that it wasn't.
However, I would rather wait until I get better info before assuming it was all his fault. What if YOU were sent to deliver a timely package and given the wrong address ? Later, after getting a call from the angry client your boss calls you in and says, YOU WENT TO THE WRONG ADDRESS. Can we then assume it is ALL YOUR FAULT ?
You are not going to get that info unless the miniscule chance of a followup article is published after the investigation.
I still think you are missing the point of the discussion here. We are indeed talking about the incident from those various possibilities. You are never going to get the final facts on this.
i.e.
If the mistake was his, then...
If the mistake was the dispatcher's, then...
I will say this, if the cop couldn't get a clear communication from the dispatcher, he should not have entered the property until he was certain of the address he was being given. This is not like delivering a newspaper to the wrong house.
Which is ?
If the mistake was his, then...
The responsibility for this is on the police. No doubt. Exactly where is my point. You cannot 'fix' a problem if you don't know where and how it occurred.
We’re just talking about which of the several scenarios that must have occurred for this to happen.
It shouldn’t be difficult for them to figure out. What they will do about it is another matter.
Since it has been blown way out of proportion, I'm sure that the Mayor/PD response will be in the same vein.
