Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) took to the House floor Tuesday night to urge African-American mothers follow the example of a Baltimore woman who forced her son to leave the city's riots.
Video of Toya Graham slapping her son for participating in the Baltimore riots went viral. Rush, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, said mothers of African-American children should use their "awesome powers" to push back against violence.
"I would like to make a special appeal to African-American mothers across this country. That they begin to use their awesome powers to take back our streets from the daily violence that far too many of our youth, far too many of our families, and far too many of our communities are experiencing each and every day," Rush said.
Rush stood beside a photo taken from the video of Graham ordering her son to stay away from the dangerous riots. "Beside me today is an image that many across the nation have seen and it's the subject of conversation all across our country. The image of a strong black mother giving her son what I will call a low whooping a low whooping to snatch him back from the senseless violence that is currently plaguing the city of Baltimore, Maryland. As this picture demonstrates, mothers can and mothers must be the mobilizing force to take back our streets," Rush said.
Graham, the Baltimore mother, said she wanted to prevent her son from becoming another Freddie Gray.
"He gave me eye contact. And at that point, you know, not even thinking about cameras or anything like that, Graham said in an interview with CBS News. "That's my only son, and at the end of the day I don't want him to be a Freddie Gray.
The Illinois Democrat further blasted the violence in Baltimore and accused rioters of "pillaging" their own neighborhood.
"That makes no sense. That's eating the wrapper and throwing away the candy bar," Rush said.
Yet in other circumstances, you'd be leading the charge to have her jailed for child abuse.
Sad that this admonition is addressed to mothers, not mothers and fathers.
Anybody who’s ever been or raised a teenage boy knows that nothing in the world is more educational than being knocked clear across the room by Dad, when you deserve it.
Mothers can go one step further and MARRY the father of her children.
Pathetic to see what the absence of fathers does to a society. This point should be driven down the throats of the Left, which believes government can replace the family. The government produces deformed characters that it feels it can control through its brainwashing by “education”, but it always has to resort to bloodshed to achieve its eternally elusive Utopia.
Black wives matter.
....Yet absent the father, at least the mother in question stepped up to the plate and got her son OUT of that violent situation. God Bless her.
I served on a grand jury
You’ll like it. It may be a little longer than regular jury duty.
Growing up we roamed the streets all day. In my home, as a kid, i had to be home by nightfall. Otherwise there was no adult supervision. If the cops would stop they knew who your dad was.
While a few kids got into a little trouble, usually small stuff, mostt of us just had fun.
The difference between Baltimore and small town USA is if we got into trouble we would have to deal with dad. Which was worse than dealing with the police.
thanks :) looking at long day but that’s ok then. Proud to serve
This is unfortunately untrue.
These people don’t get married because they’re irresponsible and the males are generally thugs.
The notion that all would be well if the irresponsible thug biodad just stuck around and helped raise the kids is ludicrous. I fail to see how this is an improvement over his being absent.
If he weren’t irresponsible he wouldn’t be fathering children out of wedlock. Since he is irresponsible, he’s unlikely to stick around for 20 years.
Kind of like the guy with cheese and bread, who said that he could have a ham and cheese sandwich if only he had some ham. True but irrelevant.
BTW, it’s the irresponsible part, not the thug part, that is at issue. Lots of Irish, Italian and Jewish gangsters in the past were good family men.
Right, but maybe you’ll have to be available for a couple weeks, until it’s over.
There will be several cases you’ll sit on which may not be full days for you.
thanks again. says up to 2 days a week for 120 days possibly.
I don’t know about the 120 days.
I think I had to go a couple days a week (not full days) for a few weeks.
You will have to check in with them daily for a couple weeks.
I think that’s how it was
I’m from new York and it actually states 120 days possibly and two days a week possibly but I’m sure it wont be. you are probably right. a couple of weeks.
Mothers?
Where are the men????
Might as well be mothers, since there are no fathers anywhere to be found.
Ridiculous .... These black women have held up enough of the burden all these years. They speak as if the fathers are just shadows.
Black men, where are you? These are your children — your families, YOUR community!!!! Act like MEN for a change and this crap will stop.
How is it MY husband has stuck by me for almost 30 years, has slugged into and held a steady job for all that time ... Supported us all, never strayed, never once on booze or drugs, never cheated, leads a stable, almost boring life all so he can pay his taxes and stay out of jail??
To add to that, he served his country in the military for 27 years!!
My husband is white, but didn’t have a damn dime ever given to him ... His own dad was a drunk and he grew up in a solid blue collar neighborhood.
It’s not color of the skin .... It’s Choices.... And I’m so damn sick of seeing these men excused from their responsibilities while other men are literally bone exhausted as they work doing the right thing to keep this society afloat!!
It depends on the case load.
You don’t decide innocence or guilt. I think it is just that your group will decide if there is enough evidence for the thing to go to trial.
Tough to do that when Baby Daddy is either off impregnating someone else or "doing time."
