~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Naval Base San Diego, California

Naval Base San Diego is the largest base of the United States Navy on the west coast of the United States, in San Diego, California. Naval Base San Diego is the principal homeport of the Pacific Fleet, consisting of 60 ships and an additional 50 tenant commands. The base is comprised of 14 piers stretched over 977 acres of land and 326 acres of water. The total on base population is 35,000 military personnel and 7,000 civilians.

A thoroughly modern, state-of-the-art naval facility, Naval Base San Diego is now homeport to approximately 50 ships, including 37 U.S. Navy ships, two U.S. Coast Guard cutters and various ships of the Military Sealift Command, as well as research and auxiliary vessels. Now, the base welcomes the Navy’s newest and most advanced 21st century fleet platforms known as Littoral Combat Ships.

Ashore, Naval Base San Diego is also home to approximately 100 separate tenant commands and other Navy support facilities, each having specific and specialized fleet support missions.

Naval Base San Diego today is a city within a city, providing the same services as any metropolitan district, not just to its inhabitants – the Sailors and other personnel who call the base its workplace or home – but the pier-side needs of the ships as well.

Direct services include power, water and steam; hard and wireless communication lines, repair and training facilities. Support services includes less direct and indirect fleet support: waterfront operations, force protection (security), supply, Navy Exchange and Commissary shopping centers, bachelor quarters, food services, and public affairs.

Other services also supported are administration, transient personnel administration fiscal management, equal employment opportunity, civil engineering, family services, recreation on the base and near various military family housing areas, medical and dental care, religious services, transportation, utilities, legal support, counseling and assistance, facility maintenance, fire protection, educational services, and child care for more than 300 children daily at the base Child Development Center.

Learn More About Naval Base San Diego HERE!

San Diego has one of the richest aviation heritages of any city in the country. Convair, home of such famous aircraft as the B-24 Liberator and the PBY Catalina, was founded here. Ryan Aeronautical, home of Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis, was located here, and North Island Naval Air Station is the home of naval aviation. Much of that knowledge is captured and conveyed through the San Diego Air & Space Museum, a major institution unique to the region and one of the preeminent aviation museums in the nation.

In 1986 the Museum became the first aero-themed museum to be accredited by the American Association of Museums, and it is now a Smithsonian affiliate. The California Legislature voted to declare the Museum "California's official Air and Space Museum and Education Center. Because of San Diego's contributions to aviation and aerospace history and technology, it is only fitting that the Museum is now recognized as one of the country's premier aerospace museums.

In The Same Boat
April 28, 2015

When He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. —Matthew 8:23

When the cruise ship pulled into port, the passengers got off as quickly as possible. They had spent the last few days enduring an outbreak of a virus, and hundreds of people had been sickened. One passenger, interviewed as he disembarked, said: “Well, I don’t mean to complain so much. I mean I know everybody was in the same boat.” His seemingly unintentional pun made the reporter smile.

In Matthew 8, we read about another trip on the water (vv.23-27). Jesus got into the boat and the disciples followed Him (v.23). Then a terrible storm arose, and Jesus’ disciples feared for their lives. They awakened a sleeping Jesus, who they assumed was unaware of the crisis.

While Jesus was literally in the same boat as His followers, He was unconcerned about the weather. As the all-powerful Creator, He had no fear of a storm. “He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm” (v.26).

But we are not all-powerful, and we are oh-so-prone to fear. So what are we to do when the storms of life rage around us? Whether they quickly blow over or last for a long time, we can be confident in this: We are in the same boat with the One whom even the winds and the sea obey.

Heavenly Father, this life is full of uncertainty. But You have promised us Your unfailing presence. May we see You today—especially when we are tempted to panic or to do things in our own strength.
No danger can come so near the Christian that God is not nearer.

INSIGHT: Today’s passage contains a beautiful story of Jesus’ power when He commands the winds and the waves to obey Him, giving further evidence that He is the Creator (see Col 1:16). Jesus’ question in Matthew 8:26 may seem harsh, but the disciples had been with Jesus long enough now that they should have had a better understanding of who He was. Immediately following the account of the calming of the wind and waves is the account of Jesus’ power over demons (vv. 28-34). This would have been another reminder that the disciples should have faith in Him.

My bro served on the George C Marshall and was in San Diego and my son went to boot camp at MCRDSD. I loved being in San Diego. Most beautiful city for consistent architecture. It was in bloom in spring 2011.

I am prepared to give my life in their defense."
