Washington (CNN)Rep. Mike Honda this week became one of the first lawmakers in Congress to support the idea of a gender spectrum and publicly announce a family member, his granddaughter, is transgender.
The California Democrat urged acceptance of transgender individuals in a profile of his 8-year-old granddaughter Malisa, who was born a boy, in the San Jose Mercury News.

People may say, "It's just a phase or they'll grow out of it," Honda told the paper.
"But we have to be a little bit more in tune with what youngsters are telling us. From there we can develop better solutions, be more thoughtful," he added.
The congressman, who is a member of the House LGBTQ caucus, hadn't publicly spoken about his granddaughter's transition until recently.
He had the family take a new photo for his campaign materials last cycle to reflect his granddaughter's new identity, telling Malisa that "we need you to be who you are in the campaign photos."
On Wednesday, he brought it to wider attention with a tweet saying he's the "proud grandpa of a transgender grandchild."

Growing up we only had boys and girls.
I should’ve known it would be that snake Honda.
I should’ve known it would be that snake Honda.
We still have only boys and girls (except for the tiny percentage of the genetically-damaged, etc.) and it’s still impossible to change from one to the other.
Everything else is, literally, just a fashion statement.
These boys and girls are influenced by adults — sick mentally twisted adults.
Some are so twisted that they want something like this to bring attention to themselves.
Kids at 8 years of age don’t know a thing about being a tranny.

Absolutely unbelievable! Eight years old, and just how does he know at that age? Someone is helping/enabling.
Nuclear level oy veh. I’m sorry this man thinks torturing his grandchild is “good”.
Outrageous.
Oh, California....
Why don’t we just go ahead and let Mexico take it?
I concur. I imagine it’s a combination of the many factors you mentioned, plus cultural influence. Some kids crave (abnormally) constant attention and the never ending articles, lessons and celebration of transgender people gives them that.
When mental illness is celebrated and encouraged rather than treated these kids will have a lifetime of misery.
Like the anti-vaxxers....this is all just hype and crazy parents looking for attention ( also making money from their “strange” kids, whom they have influenced ! )and in this case, a grandparent.
Because one of the planks of the Communist Manifesto is to destroy the traditional sovereign family and societal norms.
How about a 5 year old?

pure and simple
If he decided he was a puppy would they have him with a collar sleeping out back in a dog house?
I remember when there were normal democrats. Not anymore.
“Why the explosion of gender dysphoria cases now? “
I suspect two reasons. It’s fashionable, which implies at some point it will be unfashionable. (Of course, I thought this about tattoos and their prevalence has not declined.) The other...well, I asked a gay man about why another gay man was acting out so...uhm...extravagantly. He pranced a few steps (which was unusual for him) waved his hands over his head and in a falsetto voice sang out, “lookatmelookatmelookatme.”
So fashion and attention-getting. I’d be interested in other theories.
The left wants to corrupt these children, they believe the younger the better.
There must be a cause. Surely someone is doing research on this. It is crazy.
At 8 in the 1950s I was playing with my brother’s cars and trucks and he played Tea Party with me..
He grew up to be a Navy veteran and a grandfather and I am happily a Nana who still likes to wear lipstick, heels and dresses..
Neither of us transgendered at all...
