BERLIN (AP) — A widely used assault rifle has "no future" with the German military in its current form, Germany's defense minister said Wednesday, escalating a dispute over the weapon's alleged shortcomings.

Ursula von der Leyen said last month that a study showed the G36 rifle has a "precision problem, particularly at high temperatures."....

Since the top three problems in the German Army (such as I is) are in order:
Obesity
Alcohol
Desertion.

It seems the weapon they choose is the least of their worries. Face they will not use it anyway.

So they get plastered and roll off the base?

HK says it’s the ammunition-the jackets are too thin apparently.

Here’s the thing...the G 36 has been around for a minimum of two decades, and is standard gear for at least twenty countries. No one ever said a word of issues until this popped up around three or four years ago with the German Army. The culprit....at least believed by most....is the recent bullets purchased by the Army, which has a different delivery spec.

Someone is in the shadows and doing the negative talk to ensure their alternate gun will be purchased.

They’ve been using that rifle since 1995 I wonder what is just now causing them to find accuracy problems. A more cynical person might ask what other gun companies have been lobbying the German parliament.

The Germans engineer things two ways, perfectly or really bad to the point you wonder how they could have done it.
If you are going to have a 5.56, an AR is so refined, in so many variants, that nothing else really makes sense.

Basically yes.

Our official position with Germany post WWII has been:
Keep the Germans down, keep the Russians out.

Success has its unintended circumstances.

Anyway, the German army really has no need for much in the way of rifles. They will never engage in an external war and everyone knows it. At best they will be fobbits on a NATO effort somewhere, supplying bulk fuel.
And nobody will invade Germany in the next several decades at least.

SO it’s really just a curiosity what rifle they use. They might as well buy Swedish Mausers.

“No one ever said a word of issues until this popped up around three or four years ago with the German Army.”

From what I’ve read, the problem appears to be a with the newer “type C” version.

It seems combination of ammunition, and changes made that replaced alloys with polymers, making the weapon a pound lighter. Seems the polymers deform when exposed to prolonged heat.

"If you are going to have a 5.56"

and I would say that there is a very big "IF" that needs serious attention.

There are apparently going to be a lot of German surplus rifles on the market.

How do I get one?

HK recoil operated designs require heavy brass, or the casings can shear.

My old H&K 91 always left the brass with a large deformation on one side.

My 7.62mm variant of the Galil did that. I traded away and bought a milling machine.

I have a PTR 91 that I hate to shoot because the chamber flutes tear up my brass so bad. Some folks say it’s still reloadable but it doesn’t look like it.
