There are two reasons why this proposal came specifically from Christie, among all the Republican candidates. The first reason is that Christie is not a serious presidential candidate, no matter what he and his supporters might say. The guy couldn't even win his own state -- which is a perfect constituency for his personality -- so there's no way in hell he could ever win more than a small handful of heavily Republican states.

The second reason is that he's very familiar with the demographic and financial disaster facing Social Security and Medicare. The cost of supporting retirees has driven New Jersey to the brink of insolvency, and his successful campaigns in this state were based largely on his goal of reining in these costs to ward off a financial disaster.

Just give me my money and my employers’ contribution, plus interest back, and we will call it even. Pretend you are bailing out the banksters.
