China gave approval to build a home-grown "third-generation" nuclear reactor, a technology that will help optimize the country's energy mix and also one that Beijing wants to export.
The State Council, or cabinet, said on Wednesday it had approved building a pilot reactor of "Hualong 1" on China's coast, according to a statement posted on the central government's website www.gov.cn, without giving further details.
"It's not only an inevitable choice to diversify clean energy sources, but also helps raise global competitiveness of China's equipment manufacturers...

China will approve six to eight nuclear reactors this year, the China Nuclear Industry Association said in an annual report, as it races to meet ambitious capacity targets for 2020.
The associations general secretary Zhang Huazhu said another eight reactors would go into commercial operation this year, which would be the biggest annual rise in Chinas history.
China currently has 23 reactors in commercial operation with a total installed capacity of 21.4 gigawatts. Another 26 are under construction, with additional capacity of 28.5 GW.

Chinese are capable of building quality stuff for a long time already.
The problem this stuff is not cheap.
That is a primary reason why most of the Chinese made things you are familiar with are of low quality. Price, not quality is of the most concern for most customers of consumer goods and it is made this way to cut costs and outprice competitors.

I agree 100%. I have some electronic test equipment made in China that is as good as anything I've seen from Agilent/Keysight. The user manual doesn't have the best literary quality, but the performance is there.
