THE UNIPARTY DELUSION IN BRITAIN AND AMERICA

There was a "debate" between political parties in the United Kingdom Thursday night with five leaders on the stage from the leading parties that aren't in power.

PM David Cameron only wanted to participate in one debate so this format was concocted by the BBC as an alternative to an all party debate. Also excluded, Cameron's partner party in government, the Liberal Democrats.

Labour leader Ed Miliband was joined by UKIP leader Nigel Farage, Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon, Welsh nationalist leader Leanne Wood and Green Party leader Natalie Bennett.

Sturgeon, Wood and Bennett whose main differences with Miliband is their support for either independence from the UK or real "Progressive" economic policies were quick to approach him after the debate. Heck, they could be potential coalition partners if the major Uniparties don't win a majority which seems increasingly likely.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage was left standing alone on the other side of the room. Indeed, Farage is on the "other side" not wanting the extreme progressivism or separatism of the three women, nor the Corporatism with a 'progressive" mask offered by Miliband.

The four non-Uniparty parties (other than Miliband's) stand to get 25 percent of the popular vote on May 7th based on current polling data (is the data skewed low?) and 10 percent of the 650 seats in the House of Commons, making one or more of them possible players in breaking the deadlock of a "hung Parliament".

Its been some 25 years since the modern Uniparty politics of Britain were developed first with the rebellion by pro-European Union elitists in the Conservative Party that deposed anti-EU Margaret Thatcher.

This was followed by the development of "New Labour" and its then youthful leader, Tony Blair, that swept to victory in 1997. "New Labour" was a more pragmatic party, not so rigid on socialist economic dogma and more pro-business.

Not to be outdone, the 2010 general election featured the emergence of the "New Tory" Conservative Party of David Cameron, a party not so rigid on social matters like gay marriage or the welfare state or the EU. Cameron won the election but not a majority forcing him into coalition with the Liberal Democrats.

What was going on in reality was the establishment of Uniparties in British politics, parties with no real differences subordinate to Big Business and Big Banks. "Corporatism" as Nigel Farage describes it, a "cartel" of business as usual political parties.

Good news for UKIP Thursday with a million pound donation from "Daily Express" owner Richard Desmond, who called UKIP a party for 'good ordinary British people'.

UKIP will need the cash for the last weeks of the campaign because between now and May 7th the full weight of the Uniparty Political Machines will be turned against UKIP and other outsider parties to scare their voters back to the Uniparty fold.

Their major weapon is Fear. The big parties spread the notion that the other big parties are so radical and extreme that the voters must vote either Labour or Conservative or Lib Dem or else everyone will be in concentration camps....sarc.

I think the only "Conservatism" that Republicans in the US or Conservatives in the UK can offer is a juggled shell gamed tax code to benefit special interests and that ultimately takes more money out of people's pockets since they have no plans to dismantle big government-the Welfare State. The "Left" Uniparties will not undo it because the elite interests want it.

The only "Progressivism" Democrats in the US or Labour or the Lib Dems in the UK can offer is "Sexual Progressivism" with repression of faiths opposing it that will not be undone by the Uniparties opposing them because the elite interests want it.

It was Labour that first picked the mantle of "social issues" in the 1960's when both abortion and homosexuality were legalized when Harold Wilson was Prime Minister.

The “corporatism” mentioned has existed in the US since the time of Andrew Jackson. And it has generally resulted in disaster, in one form or another.

To start with, Jacksonian Democrats were repugnant people. Bitter, hate-filled, angry, racist, and resentful of anyone better than they. Mark Twain’s character Pap Finn was an idealized version of the average Jacksonian:

“Huck’s abusive, drunken father. He had vanished but shows up at the beginning of the story and forcibly takes his son to live with him. He also tries to sue Judge Thatcher to get the six thousand dollars Huck had given the Judge for safekeeping and confiscates whatever money Huck has in his pocket, using it to get drunk. He is infuriated that his son would try to amount to more than he did and live in better conditions. He demands that Huck quit school, threatening him with whipping. Soon after Huck escapes, Pap Finn leaves to search for him and doesn’t return.”

Jackson himself loathed big business and high society, so sought to abuse them. In response, the Whig political party was formed by businessmen as an alternative, but one entirely focused on business.

But having done so, the Whigs were a rallying point for everyone horrified of what Jackson had done and was doing.

And the Whig party lasted until the divisive issue of slavery arose. The business oriented leaders of the Whigs could not bring themselves to strongly oppose slavery, because slavery “was good for business”. But the rank and file of the Whigs were strongly opposed to slavery, and got even more so as time went by.

Eventually, this caused the collapse of the Whigs, and the formation of the Republican party, an organization that while *respectful* to most business, was oriented to ending slavery and restoring the voice of the people to power.

In other words, the people first, and then business.

While the Whigs continued, in much diminished form, because of the money of the wealthy businessmen, it was over as a political force. Nobody but a small number would vote for them. So the Whig leaders migrated to the Republican party and used their money to slowly ascend in its leadership, with the idea of a takeover.

They eventually achieved this after the war, and pretty much held sway, with some major setbacks, like “Trust Busting” and anti-monopoly laws.

The early progressives, T. Roosevelt and Wilson, forced the Whig-Republicans to the top of the heap again, with the last conservative president being Warren G. Harding, but filling his cabinet with Whig Republicans, so that when he died, Calvin Coolidge in effect brought back the Whig leadership (along with the terrible Teapot Dome scandal, blamed on his predecessor.)

This blind fellowship of corporate America culminated in the rise of Herbert Hoover, who showed the worst pitfall of the Whig attitude: that the depression had to be solved from the top down (technically correct), while the average American was suffering terribly.

And starving people will embrace the devil, if he promises them relief. And they did.

When next they got a chance, Dwight Eisenhower ascended with the support of the “Country Club” Republicans, as well as the group he later coined the term of “the military-industrial complex”. And he clearly understood the danger of this group having uncontrolled power and becoming a threat to the nation and its people.

It was short lived, however, and the Whigs and the conservatives, everybody else, had to endure JFK and LBJ, before the next Whig president, Richard Nixon, arose.

Nixon was of a new kind of Whig, however. One who did not just embrace American corporations, but multinational ones as well. This was a dangerous new development, because while American corporations were for the most part patriotic, these massive multinationals were not.

And for once, internationalist socialists and multinational corporations had similar goals, but wildly different ends in mind.

So here we find ourselves today, the Republican leadership, the RINOs, liberal Republicans, the GOP-e, finding common cause with the socialist left, to the detriment of our nation. The socialists hate the very idea of nations, and seek to weaken and impoverish America; and the Whigs hope to make ridiculous profits at the expense of America.

For this reason, conservatives are the last, best hope for America, because if they can take over the Republican party, and purge its Whig leadership, our nation can have good governance again, something it has been deprived of for a very long time.
