I used to take a two sandwich, fruit and desert bag lunch to school. When I had snow-shoveling or paper route money, I would buy the hot lunch and generally buy an extra of the main dish. The owner of the service station where we sometimes hung out called me “string bean” and he wasn’t being ironic. Back in the 50’s and early 60’s we ate good and played hard. Hardly any of the kids were fat.
