I’m going with my “rampant employee theft” theory.

A FReeper opined a few days ago that the closed stores may be used for internment of American citizens during martial law.

I’m not inclined to tin-foil-hattery, but given the current climate, such a thing is not outside of the realm of possibilities, even if it is seemingly outlandish.

Retail establishments, in general, are greatly overbuilt.

Personally, I often have to decide if I want to spend a flat $6 fee (often less) for shipping and shop in my bathrobe or get in the car, fight traffic, jockey for parking, stand in line, risk not finding what I want, etc. for the instant gratification of having it now.

I like to use the phrase “corrupt store” meaning everyone from management on down. Too many employees to investigate not to mention fighting with NLRB on firings and what not. Easier to just shut it down and rehire 6 months later.

Exactly, employees and customers are simply stealing all the profits and more.

I would think that is the whole issue in a nutshell, without discussing it publicly.

Close them, count everything, do a complete audit of the paperwork, ditch most of the staff and then re-open them in 6 months time.

The one in Brandon was in a nice, middle class town, so I would be surprised if it was theft. Of course, it only takes "one bad apple", so maybe it is???
