A Maryland pedestrian bridge frequented by fishermen, dog walkers and families who go there to watch the trains passing below collapsed Wednesday after a Metro contractors excavator smashed into the 50- to 60-foot structure.
The span was open, but empty, at the time, and nobody was hurt. The actions of the contractor, Skanska, are under review.
A large section of the bridges concrete base and walkway which traversed Green Line and MARC train tracks in Prince Georges County crashed onto a construction vehicle below, leaving the bridges mangled chain-link safety fencing hanging awkwardly in the air.

The bridge in question is by Berwyn Road.
Good luck for anybody commuting from Greenbelt north tomorrow morning. It is going to be an ugly, ugly commute.

Ya gotta love public transit, especially fixed rail.

???
A guy on a crane breached into an overhead walkway. Big deal. Oh, I know, never happens on car/bus routes. (Cue 1999 accident on Balto beltway, exact same thing except just a random truck driving by, kills people and stops beltway for days.)
Never mind it was all clear overnight.
Poor example of how “bad” rail is.

Fortunately I was not - I received an email alert from MTA at 3:53 p.m. notifying me that Camden Line service was suspended. I expected the worst, but by the time I left the Office, normal service on Camden had been restored. The Metro Green Line, which runs adjacent to the Camden Line between College Park and Greenbelt, was suspended until this afternoon - shuttle bus service between the two stations.
