There's a scene in the movie
The Way We Were where everyone gets together after hearing the news of the president's death to spend time together and drink. (If you remember the movie, only Babs's character is a lib and a New Dealer, Hubbell and his friends are no fans of FDR.) Well, after a few unkind jokes about Eleanor and some mocking of FDR even they break down and cry.
I would imagine if the only president you remember there being croaks, you gonna be sad--possibly just because your world has changed.
