Rand Paul reignites the term limits debate

When Rand Paul announced his “official” candidacy for the presidency this week he sparked a number of debates, not only in the media and among his opponents, but inside the GOP. One of the less noticed ones revolved around a comment he made during the speech regarding the institution of term limits for congressional offices, similar to what we have for the Oval Office. This drew a quick response from our friend Matt Lewis, who feels that Rand is missing the mark.

"During his presidential announcement on Tuesday, Sen. Rand Paul took a stand for term limits. “We limit the president two terms” he said. “It is about time we limit the terms of Congress.”

This struck me as an odd thing for a libertarian-leaning candidate to say. After all, shouldn’t we the people get to decide whom we want to represent us…or not?"

“my god, where is your head, can’t you see that ALL our problems are traceable to the rampant corruption amongst the fab 535 going back 75 years?”

That’s too much. One 6 year term for president. Two six year terms for Senators. No more than 12 years for Reps. 12 years on the SCOTUS. No more lifetime appointments and career politicians.

There is just no getting around the fact that career politician equals corrupt politician. Vote trading, under the table agreements that do not benefit the country and crony capitalism are the most corrupting things in politics. When someone tells me how a teacher (L. B. Johnson) can enter politics and leave a millionaire with a huge ranch I might change my mind. He left teaching and only had a political position, so where did the money come from??? And there are probably many more that we don’t know about.
