Some charities fear L.A. wage could hurt their own efforts for workers

The nonprofit group Chrysalis provides work to those who struggle to get hired. The organization gives them jobs cleaning up neighborhoods, answering phones and maintaining buildings, along with training and other assistance to smooth their transition to their next jobs.

Now city leaders appear poised to require Chrysalis and other charities to offer their disadvantaged clients something else — raises of at least $3 an hour.

Unlike businesses that can pass along increased costs to customers, some nonprofits that rely on government grants worry that state and federal agencies will not increase that funding to offset the higher wages required by the city.

"We support a pathway to a higher minimum wage," Wendy Butts, chief executive officer of the L.A. Conservation Corps, told a panel of city lawmakers at a recent hearing in Watts.

But "the impact of a rapid, large increase in the minimum wage on our programs would be significant," she said. "We would be forced to reduce the number of program participants that we serve — the opposite of what all of us want to achieve."

"The real tragedy of minimum wage laws is that they are supported by well-meaning groups who want to reduce poverty. But the people who are hurt most by higher minimums are the most poverty stricken."

The stupidity of those who profess progressiveness is immeasurable. It truly is a defective gene.

Well, some of the full time people working for this non-profit are going to have to give up THEIR jobs, so more drunken bums can make the higher minimum wage! Problem solved!

I mean, it’s only FAIR!

Oh, I love this stuff...

“We support a pathway to a higher minimum wage,” Wendy Butts, chief executive officer”
Sure you do until it affects you. Wanna bet Ms Butts is a raging liberal. Now she doesn’t want to law to apply to her if the government is not going to increase the grants to pay for it.

Another turn towards 3rd-world-ism. Stupid government regulation that just creates an underground economy while hurting legitimate business.

A segment of SoCal society will ignore this, paying friends, relatives or informal networks whatever they want to pay. Government will ignore such violations for racial/political reasons.

Meanwhile middle-class and law-abiding citizens will be driven out.

I foresee a new law allowing non profits to pay less than the minimum wage.
