As Rush would say this is nothing but gobbledygook. Liberals are more compassionate with spending private resources my behind. They’re compassionate about spending other people’s money. We all know lefties are cheapskates when it comes to spending their own money.

Real statistics find two of the most conservative voting states in the union, Mississippi and Utah, who routinely compete for first and second place as those who contribute the highest percentage of their income toward charity. Two of the most liberal, both in New England (Vermont and Rhode Island, as I recall) routinely compete for last place.

And the differences are stark . . . between 7% and 8% for the top couple of states and below a fraction of 1% for the bottom.

Amazingly, he has an answer for that:

The fact that conservatives have been shown to give more money to charities than liberals is not inconsistent with the prediction from the Hypothesis; in fact, it supports the prediction. Individuals can normally choose and select the beneficiaries of their charity donations. For example, they can choose to give money to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti, because they want to help them, but not to give money to the victims of the earthquake in Chile, because they don’t want to help them. In contrast, citizens do not have any control over whom the money they pay in taxes benefit. They cannot individually choose to pay taxes to fund Medicare, because they want to help elderly white people, but not AFDC, because they don’t want to help poor black single mothers. This may precisely be why conservatives choose to give more money to individual charities of their choice while opposing higher taxes.

It still doesn't really address the issue of why conservatives give more. Liberals could give to a private agency that would guarantee to give it to whoever on a random basis, or was most likely to be offensive to the provider, or whatever.

The point is, though, that would be their money, and where's the fun in that?
