Former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden got into a heated exchange with comedian and late night host John Oliver over the ramifications of his wide-ranging leaks about U.S. surveillance apparatus during an interview that aired Sunday night.
How many of those documents have you actually read? Oliver asked Snowden, during an interview on his show, "Last Week Tonight."
Ive evaluated all of the documents that are in the archive, Snowden replied.
Youve read every single one? Oliver asked.
Well, I do understand what Ive turned over," Snowden said.
"Theres a difference between understanding whats in the documents and reading whats in the documents, Oliver replied, saying joking that the last thing youd want to do is read thousands of complicated NSA documents.
Snowden noted that he was no longer in possession of the leaked files, and they had been passed along to journalists who were now analyzing them and deciding how to report on their contents.
Oliver was skeptical.
So The New York Times took a slide, didnt redact it properly, and in the end, it was possible for people to see that something was being used in Mosul on al Qaeda, Oliver said.
That is a problem, Snowden replied.

The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Dude releases thousands of documents to media— without knowing what’s in them? And calls that freedom. Either he is a disinform operative in deep yet open cover, or a massively moronic self righteous moron traitor, with delusions of his own importance.
The idea that the media will “dole out” the appropriate stories, does speak to disinformation possibilities for the intel types in our dictatorship. Meaning— hills needs get elected. This is all disgusting. What would Nathan Hale say?
John Oliver’s show is the best written show on TV these days. Yes it slants left, but it’s still well done.
Is John’s stage presence always ‘Cuss-out angry all the time?’.
Does he ever lighten up, or is there no gain in playing it light.
the takeaway: Brit comic is ten times the journalist of any actual journalist currently on the payroll of any MSM organ.
Will Mr. Oliver question Hillary Clinton in the manner he did Snowden? Did she personally read the over 30,000 emails she deleted? Yes, that is a stupid question.
I concur.
Great show that examines news that the mainstream leaves alone.
Vice is even better even if its politics can be over the top.
Yes, they do a better job of journalism than the real media. The fact that you can laugh at the absurdity is even better.
A little bit of column A, a whole lot of column B.
Snowden noted that he was no longer in possession of the leaked files, and they had been passed along to journalists who were now analyzing them and deciding how to report on their contents.
Not going to believe someone that lied his way to a hostile country, and is proud of it.
He lied every step of the way. Lied to get in, to get access, and then lied some more about what he’d taken.
He should be shot.
Amen to both your comments. Now see where some idiots have made a statue to him.
Bizarre.
