This weekend brings Easter Sunday and the beginning of Passover, and Christians and Jews will be filing into houses of worship this weekend to celebrate - most certainly more than usual for what are considered important holy days for people of both religious persuasions.
The difference in the number of people in those churches and temples this weekend has a political significance. Often we talk about how different religious groups vote at election time, but the data show that the bigger divide in the electorate is around religious attendance - how often people go to a house of worship.
In 2012, for instance, Republican Mitt Romney won the vote coming from Protestants, capturing 57% of their vote. President Barack Obama won the vote coming from Catholics, Jews, people of other affiliations and people of no affiliation, some by large margins.
But the Obama/Romney split is even clearer when you look at it by religious attendance. There was a clear linear progression for both candidates in 2012, with Mr. Obama's support rising as church attendance falls and the opposite true for Mr. Romney.
The church attendance differences are most stark when you look at Catholics.
Yes, Mr. Obama won the overall Catholic vote in 2012, but Mr. Romney beat the president handily among Catholics who attended church at least weekly - 57% to 42%. In fact, those figures matched exactly the margins Mr. Romney had over Mr. Obama with Protestant Christians.

this week Thursday Friday...and Sunday!
I must be a fanatic.
Very interesting. Logical. Thanks.
Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday to rehearse and fellowship with the Praise and Worship team.
And then, every Sunday morning at least two hours early to set up the PA system, drums, and guitar amps. Then a sound check, then the service.
We must both be fanatics! LOL!
Then Evangelicals must go to church a lot, because they voted republican at 79%.
It still matters what religion or denomination, to a large degree.

this morning it was a 6;45 sunrise service close to twenty miles over the river and through the woods...
the sun rose pink and orange in the east
given were using daylight savings time...I figure I woke up nearly 3 am STANDARD time to get there.
That's what happens when you're in the choir (or you think possibly your voice is needed.)

I wish I were closer to my church.
here in this county....most of the churches...well most of them... just call themselves churches...So I travel a number of miles to get where I need to be.
The pious, in any religious tradition, are far less likely to worship the state than are the lax, unobservant, impious or unbelieving. No surprises here.
A similar chart for the NEXT Presidential election will be staggering
God Bless You!
Sunrise Services are lovely! :-)
Just because people don’t attend church doesn’t mean they don’t worship. They just worship at the altar of government.
Untrue, for me at least.
More “identity politics” at work, here.
I do neither of them. I just respect the Constitution and the rights of those who do worship God.
Aside from a Jehovah Witness, I’ve never had a church goer try to force their beliefs on me the way those who worship government do on a regular basis.
Just because you call yourself Catholic does not mean you actually are Catholic.
Look at Nancy Pelosi and so many pro-abortion and pro-gay “marriage” politicians. Like Obama, they may show up at church on Easter for photo-ops.
Much more often, I speak to God privately while in the beauty of His creation rather than in a church building and try to live Christian values. I do not believe being a Christan means belonging to a social organization called a church.
