With the Wisconsin men's basketball team about to make its second straight Final Four appearance, national media outlets are looking into all sorts of angles on the team.
On Thursday, USA Today published a story trying to answer this question: "Why is the Badgers' roster predominantly white?"
Reporter Josh Peter interviewed former Badgers players, assistant coaches and UW-Madison officials to get into why Wisconsin is so unlike the other Final Four teams in terms of racial makeup.

My guess is that those players can play ball as well as black players and they wanted to go to Wisconsin for their education.

Wisconsin has a very disciplined style. Bo tolerates no show-boating. Is there a racial aspect as to which players enjoy a disciplined team style as opposed to a more freewheeling style? Interesting topic, but verboten in today’s overly PC dominated zeitgeist.
It’s culture more than race. I’m a Michigan State fan, and it takes certain types of people to buy into Izzo’s style. Denzel Valentine and Bryn Forbes are almost brothers. Valentine’s dad (ex-Spartan) is a high school coach. Travis Trice’s dad is a high school coach. Izzo likes to recruit coach’s kids, football players, blue collar players, and all around tough guys. There isn’t a lot of playground ball there either, but MSU is definitely not known as a white basketball schools. It is however very Midwestern, and doesn’t get many east coast players.
They’re not white, they’re clear.
With all left turns and going around in circles progressives should be naturals at race car driving! ;-)
No guarantees to start, no trash talk, no technicals, no meaningless classes catering to athletes. Regardless of how wisconsin is portrayed African American athletes are welcomed at Wisconsin.
Jean-Pierre Tokoto, a five star recruit,played at Menomonee Falls High School in Wisconsin. Although highly recruited by Wisconsin he decided that he wanted to play at a high profile school, North Carolina, and a high profile coach, Roy Williams. If he he had gone to Wisconsin he would be playing on his second Final Four team instead of staying home and watching the games from afar. Wisconsin, by the way beat Tokoto and NC on their way to the West Championship.
Diamond Stone is almost certainly one and done at Maryland and, maybe, didnt have the grades to get into Wisconsin.
Years ago, I read a story that said 0bama tried to play the race card on the BB team. The coach told him he wasn’t good enough to be on the floor and to shut up and sit down.
