True story: The other day, I attended a speech by IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, who said phone scammers are swarming the country in the run-up to April 15, aka Tax Day.
These criminals call taxpayers and insist they must "immediately give up their personal information or make a payment," Koskinen warned. Don't fall for it. "If you are surprised to be hearing from us, you are not hearing from us," Koskinen said. "Our way of contacting you is by letter."
Oh yeah....I certainly do feel much safer now that I know this effing little Gollum m'effer is out there defending my well being.
That dude must be ancient, because I had his brother as a thermodynamics prof in engineering school back in the 60s.
We have a scam running down here from an 876 Area Code (Jamaica) claiming to be from Publishers Clearing House.
lol
Or by stormtroopers kicking in your doors and shooting Granny and Rover.
I’ve had a few of those calls myself...
This is also the same asshole who lied to the House Committee investigating the IRS that Lerner’s emails were lost and there was no way to recover them.
Two Months later (we all knew it at the time he made the statements) It becomes public that the IRS NEVER contacted the Techs to try to recover emails thru their back up servers.
So have I. I insisted that they send everything in writing.
Still get the calls but no mail from the IRS yet.
Have none of you gotten the calls that claim they are calling from the IRS and you have to turn yourself in to your local police immediately because you don’t want them coming to your door yada yada yada...The callers are all foreigners and Internal Revenue Service is Internal RAVANOO Service...Some say you have to call your attorney right away and if you don’t they can only wish you luck for a situation you brought on yourself. They all give a phone number they want you to call. One mentioned the “Washington DC Federal Police” were going to file such and such a case against me. They all end with “Have a blessed day.”
I can’t figure out the angle...they aren’t asking for money so what’s the scam and why are people wasting their time with calls like this? Are some people really dumb enough to make that phone call and get sucked into some scam?
I filed complaints with the FTC on each call I’ve received and of course, have gotten the obligatory “thank you for blah blah”
Probably want you out of your house so they can break in.
I had one of those on my answering machine the other day - call a 360 area code number or else the IRS would move ahead with their lawsuit against me. I could see where that might scare an elderly person into responding.
I got one like that. Strong accent. Asked if I had a lawyer for the lawsuit against me by the IRS.
Caller ID said “out of area”. I started raising my voice when they said the registered letters they sent were returned because nobody was home, which I knew was BS because the post office leaves a notice several times and holds on to them for a week or so. I wanted to ask for his name and phone number he was calling from so I could call him back. Then he hung up on me.
I hope they call again. Next time I want to have some fun with them first, maybe giving some alternative information just to screw with them, or maybe just go full blown with verbal abuse.
so why does the 1040 form ask for one’s telephone number, i wonder.
I have never answered the phone as most of the time there wasn’t a caller ID or name that was familiar to me or caller ID was blank which is strange. They’ve just left the stupid messages. It’s been awhile since I’ve gotten one but there were several last year.
I have been targeted with this scam 3 times in the last 6 months. We never answer the phone (caller ID says “IRS”), just let the guy rant to the answering machine. The putz has a foreign accent and the callback number isn’t a US number, so it’s not all that hard to detect the scam - but a lot of folks that actually answer it have been intimidated into giving them money, sometimes a lot of it. Stupid, yeah, but sad too. Seems like it shouldn’t be that hard to track these clowns down and lock them up - maybe just another Obola scam to keep the rubes afraid and restless?
