The poor are treated like criminals everywhere, even at the grocery store
Washington Post ^ | 4-1-15 | Jeanine Grant Lister

Anger toward those living below the poverty line seems to only be increasing. Maine and Missouri have proposed bills limiting residents’ food choices if they use SNAP. Missouri House Bill 813 would bar the state’s 930,000 food stamp recipients from using their benefits to buy cookies, chips, soda, energy drinks, steak and seafood. (The legislature also implemented mandatory drug testing for TANF applicants in 2011.) If the bill becomes law, a Missourian can’t buy a can of tuna with an EBT card. Tortilla chips to go with salsa? Nope. Flank steak — tough, stringy and the only cut of beef I can afford — is off-limits, too. Who are these people, and what makes them think that what we eat is their business? And given that the average food stamp allotment in my state in 2013 came out to just $1.41 per person per meal, I wonder if they understand that recipients couldn’t buy lobster if they wanted to.

4000 comments so far. I guess if you pay for the snap, EBT stuff, you don't have a say in what the users get to buy.

Either transfer wealth or don’t. Adding strings is against personal liberty.

Make it open. “Here’s $5000. See you next year.”

Of course many will blow thru it

I guess hundreds of people standing in bread lines is bad PR. Out of step with our “soaring” economy. LOL.

It's not your Money. And there's a high percentage of people using those cards
to buy steak and lobster only to sell it for a lower price to buy drugs and booze.

Enough already. I hope this catches on nationwide.

From what I can tell they are not being treated any worse than the people who have to pay for the benefits.

After working at the grocery store for a number of years and seeing first hand, the vast majority of food stamp recipients loading there carts up with crab legs, steaks and convenient foods, I firmly believe food stamps should be ran like WIC programs, just the essentials, milk, cheese, peanut butter, rice, beans, with the addition of veggies. It is both nutritious and cost less to eat healthy.

Who are these people, and what makes them think that what we eat is their business?

First of all, it's their business if they're paying for it.

Second of all, we now have state and federal governments that want to use taxes to raise the price of stuff they think we shouldn't eat, even though we pay for it ourselves.

So either find money to buy what you like or else STFU and eat what other people are willing to buy for you, and be thankful about it.

Lord, this entitlement mentality is killing our country and our society.
